THIS WEEK
The University of Utah men's golf team's is preparing to jump into the second month of their 2023-24 campaign and they'll begin October with a trip to Notre Dame, Ind., the site of the Fighting Irish Classic, a two-day, 54-hole tournament that will take place on Sunday and Monday at the Warren Golf Course.
This competition is familiar territory for the Utes, as this is the third consecutive year that Utah has competed in the Fighting Irish Classic. During the 2021-22 season, the Utes excelled in South Bend, finishing in third place overall and posting the fourth-best 36-hole team score on record at Utah, completing day one 5-under. The Utes capped a phenomenal tournament by shooting 5-under on the final 18 while recording 20 birdies and tying the fourth-best 54-hole team score on record at Utah at 10-under (830).
Javier Barcos shined for Utah during the 2021 Fighting Irish Classic, placing second place on the final leaderboard. Barcos was consistently sharp throughout the tournament, shooting 6-under in day one and 5-under in the final round. Barcos led the Utes by shooting an 11-under 199 throughout the three rounds and carded the lowest 54-hole individual score on record at Utah.
THE FIELD
The Utes will be one of 15 teams in the tournament field, with the event's highest ranking squad being the No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers. The list of competitors also includes Purdue, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Kent State, Louisville, Northwestern, Kansas State, Rutgers, Indiana, Kansas, Georgia Southern, Iowa State and Iowa.
UTAH'S LINE-UP
Five Utes are preparing to tee off in South Bend and coach Garrett Clegg will be relying on the quintet of Javier Barcos, Braxton Watts, Brandon Robison, Sergio Jimenez and Go Nakatsukasa.

"This is a great tournament on a fantastic golf course," said Clegg. "Javier and Braxton played last year and are excited to get back to South Bend. This week the field is the best we have seen to this point in the year. I'm looking forward to seeing how our team competes this week."
LAST TIME OUT
The Utes were led by Barcos during their most recent excursion on the golf course, which occurred on Sept. 18-19 at the Husky Invitational. The Estella, Spain native only narrowly missed out on the ninth top 10 finish of his Utah career, tying for 11th with an overall score of 3-under. He finished the tournament with his lowest round of the young season so far, posting a 3-under 69 that allowed him to move 16 spots up the leaderboard.
Watts matches his lowest round so far in 2023-24 during the team's time in Bremerton, shooting a second round 68, while Robison finished the tournament with a 1-under 71. Playing in the Husky Individual Invitational, Jimenez started fast with a 68, his lowest score at a Ute to this point, then finished with a 3-under 69 to leave Washington in a tie for 17th. As a team, the Utes tied for ninth.
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The Fighting Irish Classic will be a 54-hole event, starting with 36 holes on Sunday, followed by an 18-hole final round on Monday.
