SALT LAKE CITY – After beginning the 2024 portion of their schedule with a pair of home triumphs, the University of Utah swimming and diving team is heading to Los Angeles, where multiple competitions will keep the Utes busy.
The squad's female swimmers will start the weekend by squaring off with the USC Trojans on Friday, starting at 2 p.m. PT (3 p.m. MT) at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center, followed one day later by a clash with the UCLA Bruins at the Speiker Aquatics Center that will get underway at 11 a.m. PT. Meanwhile, Utah's divers will taking part in the UCLA Diving Invitational, which will stretch from Friday through Sunday.
This is the second consecutive season the Trojans and the Bruins are on the Utes' schedule, though it will be the team's first visit to either program's pool since Oct. of 2019. When the school's met a year ago,
Summer Stanfield and
Norah Hay were two of Utah's top performers, Stanfield winning the 200 fly against the Bruins and Hay besting the field in the 200 back versus the Trojans.
The UCLA Diving Invite has been a frequent destination for coach
Richard Marschner's student-athletes and in the 2023 edition,
Holly Waxman and
Elias Petersen both recorded multiple top 10 finishes and a pair of NCAA Championship qualifying scores.
In the Pool
The Utah women will take on both of these challenging foes following a strong showing against Colorado Mesa on Jan. 5 in which the Utes won both of the day's relays and saw five swimmers pick up individual victories. Leading the way was
Erin Palmer, who bested the field in the 50 breast, the 50 free and the 100 individual medley, the third time in 2023-24 Palmer won multiple events in a single meet.
Stanfield and Hay also swam into the winner's circle more than once, with Hay winning the 50 and 150 back, while Stanfield topped the competition in the 150 free and 300 IM. Both student-athletes have pocketed more than one triumph in more than one meet during the current campaign.
"I want great attitudes, positivity, and a race mentality," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "USC and UCLA are very good teams, so the only thing we can do is to focus on ourselves and do what we need to do and I know that we will have a couple of great meets. The girls are excited and ready to get back to PAC-12 action!"
On the Boards
Petersen and Waxman will be attempting to repeat their performances from last year's UCLA Invite and they're both coming off top notch showings against Colorado Mesa.
Waxman won both the 1m and 3m against CMU, the first time in 2023-24 she's taken the top spot in multiple events in the same meet. She also put up NCAA Championship Qualifying marks in both events, with a score of 289.95 in the 1m and 312.53 in the 3m.
Not to be outdone, Petersen performed a similar feat in the men's competitions, piling up 328.65 points in the 1m and 396.68 in the 1m. This represented the fourth time in 2023-24 Petersen has completed a meet with two triumphs to his credit. The work of Waxman and Petersen earned both student-athletes the Pac-12's Diver of the Week awards.
"We love going out to this meet because it gives us the opportunity to compete against the best teams in our zone," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner, "and so the competition level is very similar to what we'll be seeing in March when we're trying to qualify for NCAAs. I'm looking forward to seeing how our women do in the diving team event as we're trying out a new order and different dives for everyone. The squad is very excited about the team event, as it will be an official event at the Big 12 Championships when we join next year, so it'll be nice to get the recognition they deserve."
