SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah swimming and diving team recorded nine top three finishes on a day when the squad's swimmers competed in a meet against the USC Trojans at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center and the team's divers took part in the first day of action at the UCLA Diving Invitational at the Spieker Aquatics Center.
In the Pool vs. USC
Two of Utah's top three finishes were each scooped up by
Erin Palmer and
Norah Hay and Palmer achieved one of the Utes' highest finishes of the day by posting a time of 1:04.17 in the 100 breast to place second. She swam into third in the 50 free, clocking in at 23.60.
Hay's day began with a third-place showing in the 100 back, coming in at 57.20 and she added to her performance by snagging third in the 200 back in 2:01.00.
Cameron Daniell's efforts in the 1000 free earned her second place with a mark of 10:14.19 and
Hilja Schimmel collected third in the 50 free in 23.60.
Summer Stanfield added one more top three finish to Utah's ledger by landing in second in the 200 back in 2:00.35.
"I thought today was solid," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "Not great, not bad, but very solid. We learned a lot today about where we're at what we need to work on how we need to approach on meeting tomorrow versus UCLA. Do also nice just to get out and competing against another Pac, 12 team, and, get that kind of away and then back to the action again and I think that we will certainly improve a lot tomorrow."
On the Boards at the UCLA Diving Invitational
Elias Petersen and
Holly Waxman both captured top 10 finishes as Utah's divers got their three-day stay in California off to an excellent start.
The male divers started the competition on the 3m and Petersen put together an excellent performance to rack up 370.35 points in the prelims and 356.75 in the finals, good enough for second place. Petersen also surpassed the NCAA Championships qualifying standard.
Waxman was in top form in the 1m, recording a score of 284.90 to start the day, then improving that mark to 289.05 to take home third and put up an NCAA qualifying score of her own.
Kathryn Grant placed ninth in the 1m and her total of 267.95 in the finals also topped the NCAA championships benchmark.
Sydney Kowalski ended the day in 21st.
Kowalski, Grant and Waxman also teamed up to put together a strong showing in the women's team event, besting nine other squads to place second. The Utes finished with a total of 277.05, besting teams from BYU and UCLA.
"We had an excellent day on the boards," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "I'm happy with how we competed. It wasn't anything spectacular, but then we looked at the results and realized we finished second third with a top 10 finish from Kathryn as well. To be really steady throughout was great because there is a lot more left. This is a really tough meet against some of the best competition in the country and the zone and it sets us up well for tomorrow."
Looking Ahead
Utah's female swimmers will make the short trip to the UCLA campus on Saturday to match up against the Trojans, while the team's divers will compete on day two of the UCLA Diving Invitational.
