IRVING, Texas – Utah head men's basketball coach
Craig Smith will be accompanied by student-athletes
Gabe Madsen and
Lawson Lovering at this year's Big 12 Media Day at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
The Runnin' Utes will join Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado as the newest members of the Big 12 Conference bringing to the league total to 16 teams.
Smith enters his fourth season at the helm for Utah and led the Utes to their first 20-win season since 2017-18 last year. Utah advanced to the NIT semifinals in 2023-24 before finishing 22-15 on the season with a 17-2 record at home.
Madsen played in all 37 games for the Utes last season, averaging 13.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists while breaking the Utah single-season record with 105 made 3-pointers – which was tied for 21st in the country that year. He enters this season just 40 points shy of reaching 1,000 career points as a Runnin' Ute. Madsen is joined by his twin brother
Mason Madsen this season, who transferred in from Boston College via Cincinnati.
Lovering returns as Utah's big man in the center, averaging 6.2 points and 4.7 rebounds to go with 20 blocks. The Cheyenne, Wyo., native enters his second season year with the Runnin' Utes after posting a .531 shooting clip last year.
This year's iteration of the Runnin' Utes will take the floor for the first time on Tuesday, Oct. 29, when they host CSU Pueblo for an exhibition game at 7 p.m. (MT) inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Admission is FREE for all fans in the lower bowl with postgame autographs down on the floor after the game.
The 2024-25 season-opener is slated for Monday, Nov. 4, against Alcorn State at 7 p.m. (MT) as part of a double-head with women's basketball – who will square off against Southern Utah at 11 a.m. inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
