AUSTIN – The University of Utah's dive team completed the first day of their mid-season invitational at University of Texas with senior
Holly Waxman earning her way into the 3m final competition at the Texas Diving Invitational in the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center on Friday night.
For the first session of the three-day invitational, the men competed on the 1m springboards, while the women took on the 3m event. The top 12 athletes on each board continued to the finals competition, with
Holly Waxman representing the Utes on 3m.
"Holly put together one of her best preliminary rounds I've seen from her," said head coach
Richard Marschner," and at NCAAs and Big 12s, that preliminary round is so important."
On the 3m
- Waxman's 3m prelims performance earned her an eighth-place finish, so she had the opportunity to compete for a second time later Friday evening at the 3m finals event. After the six dives of 3m finals, Waxman earned her second eighth place award of the day. Her highest scoring dive came in the final round after her forward 2 ½ somersault with 1 twist in the pike position, commonly referred to as a full-out, earned 55.50 points.
- After scoring 50.40 points on her forward 2 ½ somersaults in the pike position in the final round, Freshman Callie Eaglestone earned 18th place with a 276.95 finish.
- Following close behind, junior Kathryn Grant grabbed 20th place. Ending with a (small) splash, Grant earned 54 points on her final dive, a full out.
- Junior Sydney Kowalski placed 30th, but earned 50.40 points on her back 2 ½ tuck.
- Freshman Sarah Kauffman was not far behind at 37th.
On the 1m
- Junior Elias Petersen took 18th for the men, not scoring quite high enough to continue to finals but earned 67.50 points on his second dive, a reverse 1 ½ somersaults with 2 ½ twists.
- Freshmen Attila Bernatsky and Breck Titus placed 23rd and 26th to finish off the 1m competition.
"Even though I think we expected better results today, the team definitely made good use of the meet to prepare us for the bigger meets later in the season," said Marschner. "Essentially, 40% of the NCAA field is at this meet, so the top 20 finishes we had are pretty solid."
Looking Ahead
Competition for the divers continues Saturday morning with the women moving to 1m and the men taking on the 3m.
