ORLANDO – The 20
th-ranked Utah Volleyball team, battled back on the road to pick up the reverse sweep, 3-2 (22-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-12), against the University of Central Florida Knights. The Utes secured their first five-set comeback win since taking down California on the road with the reverse sweep on Nov. 6, 2022.
Â
It was a slow start for the Utes, trailing the Knights throughout most of the first set. The Knights held their largest lead of the first set at 19-13.
Lauren Jardine ignited a late Utah rally, putting down four points for the Utes, cutting into the UCF advantage, 22-20. Jardine had five of Utah's 10 kills in the first set, as the Utes would drop the opener, 25-22.
Â
After showing a spark at the end of the first set, the momentum didn't roll over to the second set for the Utes, as the Knights maintained the advantage throughout the early stages. Struggling to get the offense on track, UCF took a 2-0 set lead after taking the second, 25-18.
Â
Utah completely turned it around, coming out of the break after the second set, the Utes committed just four attack errors through the final three sets compared to the Knights' 18. Utah hit over .300 in each of the final three sets, holding UCF to hit below .150 in two of the final three sets.
Â
The Utah spark was ignited midway through the third set. After trading points with the Knights, the Utes posted a seven-point run with
Rianne Vos back to serve, capturing their largest lead of the day, 19-10. Utah kept the pressure on, closing out the set with a 25-18 win in the third, getting kills from
Allie Olsen and
Kamry Bailey along the way.
Â
Utah kept the momentum rolling into the fourth, taking advantage of multiple UCF errors and jumping ahead, 14-9. A quartet of Utah seniors tallied kills, as Bailey, Jardine, Olsen and Vos helped extend the lead out to 19-16. The Utes brought the fourth set to a close with a 25-20 win, evening the match up at two sets apiece.
Â
Heading into the fifth set, the Utes were the first on the board, taking advantage of another UCF miscue coming out of the gates. The two sides would not budge, trading points throughout the early going. Utah found some separation, taking an 8-5 lead at the changeover. UCF fought back to even the score at 10-10. As the two sides were in a race to 15, Utah responded with a three-point run, getting kills from
Emrie Satuala and
Kamryn Gibadlo, with
Claranne Fechter adding her second ace of the day to give the Utes a 13-10 lead. The Utes would get the final kills from Jardine and Vos, securing the comeback win with a 15-12 decision in the fifth set.Â
