AUSTIN –
Kathryn Grant and
Holly Waxman both recorded top 10 finishes in the platform competition on Sunday, which concluded the Texas Diving Invitational for the University of Utah dive team in the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin.
The day started with the women's platform event, which consisted of five rounds, before the men's competition took place, with each student-athlete performing six dives.
"The women had another very strong showing today with both Kat and Holly in the top eight," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "With this being our first tower meet of the year, it was great to see that we were very consistent and disciplined in our diving. As we get more meets under our belt, we'll be able to really fine tune things and we are setting ourselves up for great things later on."
Women's Platform
- Grant posted Utah's highest score on the women's side, piling up 259.75 points, allowing her to maneuver into sixth and record an NCAA Zone cut. Her highest total of the afternoon came on her final dive, when her back 2 ½ somersault 1 ½ twist pike earned her 60.80 points.
- Waxman wasn't far behind her teammate, finishing at 247.75, also surpassing the benchmark to qualify for NCAA Zones and placing her in eighth. Waxman's final dive of the day, a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck, garnered her a score of 53.20 and secured her place in the top 10.
- Sydney Kowalski climbed inside the top 15 with a final mark of 220.60 that included a point total of 50.40 on her fourth dive, a back 2 ½ somersault tuck.
- Callie Eaglestone placed 21st, while Sarah Kauffman concluded the day in 29th.
Men's Platform
- Jesco Helling was the top performer among Utah's men's divers, posting a score of 268.50 that put him in 14th. Helling started his day by tallying 63.0 points with a forward 3 ½ somersault pike.
- One spot behind Helling was fellow Ute Elias Petersen with a mark of 261.30. His highest point total came on the back 1 ½ somersault 1 ½ twist free.
- Attila Bernatsky totaled 207.07 points to place 18th.
"Overall, the meet was extremely successful," said Marschner, "and now we have a nice gap until Auburn to be able to make some upgrades to some dives."
Looking Ahead
Two meets are on the docket for the Utes next week, with some of the team's student-athletes heading to College Station, Texas for Texas A&M Invitational, which will be held from Wednesday to Friday, while others will be at the CMU Invitational from Wednesday through Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo.
