IRVING, Texas – The University of Utah swimming and diving program received their third weekly award after freshman
Jones Lambert was announced as the conference's Newcomer of the Week after his performance at the team's midseason competition at Texas A&M's Art Adamson Invitational, the Big 12 announced Wednesday.
Throughout the three-day invitational, Lambert swam four individual events and two relays for Utah. In those events, Lambert swam a Top Ten Time for the Utes in the 500-yard freestyle, 1000-yard free and the 1650-yard free, the aquatic equivalent of a mile.
His meet started off with the 500-free, his prelims swim coming in at 4:22.81, putting him in the A-final as the second-seed and writing Jones's name in the record books as the Utes' 10
th fastest time. In finals, the Lubbock, Texas native beat his prelim time by over 4.5 seconds, coming in second, moving him up to the fourth-fastest Ute in the Top Ten Times and earning him his first NCAA B-cut.
Jones then earned an A-final in the 200-free, touching the wall in finals with a 1:37.31 and bringing Jones a fifth-place standing.
The freshman then solidified his success with a 15:11.60 time in the mile. This performance pushed him into fourth-place at the meet, seventh-fastest mile time in the books, and his second NCAA B-cut. During Lambert's swim, his 1,000-yard split would earn his fourth Top Ten Time, putting him in ninth on the 1,000-free list.
Lambert was also in a silver-medal relay, the Texas native swam third in the men's 800-free relay helping them to finish at 6:26.38 for a second-place finish.
The distance freestyler was the second-highest scoring Ute at Art Adamson for the men's team, bringing in 46 points to aid their overall score of 878 points. This overall score put the men in a second-place finish, just behind A&M but ahead of conference rival TCU, Air Force and Incarnate Word.
