SALT LAKE CITY – It was another late rally for the University of Utah Lacrosse team in its game at Ute Field today against Air Force, but unfortunately the Utes came up short, falling 12-11. Utah is 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the ASUN.
Utah trailed by six with 5:59 to go in the third quarter, but would score six unanswered, tying things up 10-10 with 9:24 left to play in the game. Air Force took a two-goal lead with less than three minutes remaining, but a goal from
Jordan Hyde at the 1:41 mark would once again close the gap.
Unfortunately for the Utes, a last second shot to tie the game bounced off the crossbar with Air Force leaving with the one-point win. Utah's loss to Air Force today was the first regular season conference loss for the Utes since joining the ASUN.
Utah won the ground ball battle at 37-26, also winning 15 faceoffs compared to Air Force's 11.
GAME LEADERS
Sophomore
Ryan Stines led the team in points with five, scoring two goals and a season-high three assists with junior
Cody Hart scoring a team-high and career-high three goals. Senior
Jordan Hyde and sophomore
Freddie DiMarzo added two goals each with senior
Tyler Bradbury also posting two assists.
For the second game in a row, redshirt freshman
Bryce Madden led the squad in ground balls with eight, also winning a career-high 14 faceoffs. Sophomore
Nikko DiPonio also recorded a career-high seven ground balls and three caused turnovers.
FIRST HALF BREAKDOWN
Utah's first half struggles continued against the Falcons with the Utes finding the scoreboard first on a goal from
Bryce Horton and Bradbury's first assist early in the first quarter, but it would be their last goal until the 10:09 mark of the second quarter with Air Force leading 5-2.
The Falcons were able to jump out to a 7-2 lead with 4:21 to go in the half before the Utes cut the lead back to four with a goal from Stines at the 3:08 mark. Air Force would sneak one more into the back of the net before time expired in the second quarter, taking an 8-3 advantage into halftime.
SECOND HALF BREAKDOWN
Hyde scored to make it a four-point game with under 10 minutes to go in the third quarter, but Air Force countered with back-to-back goals to make it a six-point game. It was then that the Utes would start its comeback with Hart drilling a goal in with 5:00 on the clock in the third to make it 10-5.
Stines put in Utah's final goal of the third quarter to keep the scoring run going with McMahon scoring in the first minute of the fourth to make it 10-7. The run continued with back-to-back goals from DiMarzo, cutting the Falcon lead to 10-9 with 10:15 remaining in the game.
Hart tied the game 10-10 with 9:24 on the clock, but Air Force once again answered with two more goals, taking a 12-10 lead with just 3:00 to go. Hyde scored his final goal of the game with 1:41 remaining in the game, but a last second shot to tie the score for the Utes would bounce off the crossbar with Utah suffering its first ASUN loss of the season.
