Utah Lacrosse Records Season-Highs In 21-9 Victory Over Detroit Mercy

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah Lacrosse team dominated the Detroit Mercy Titans today at Ute Field, winning 21-9 to improve to 4-4 overall this season and 2-1 in ASUN play.
It marked the seventh time in program history, all under head coach Andrew McMinn, that the Utes have scored 20+ goals in a game. Utah also produced 15 assists on the 21 goals, a new school record, with the Utes' 36 total points in the game ranking second all-time.
Utah had 41 ground balls in the game compared to Detroit Mercy's 24, also winning 23 faceoffs to the Titans' 11. The Titans finished the game with 17 turnovers with 12 being forced by the Utes with Utah only turning the ball over 14 times.
GAME LEADERS
In a complete team win, Utah had 12 different players score at least one goal, led by senior Jordan Hyde who had a team-high seven points on five goals and two assists. Sophomore Ryan Stines, senior Carson Moyer and junior Colby Plotts added four points each, all scoring two goals and two assists with senior Tyler Bradbury adding a hat trick.
Redshirt freshman Bryce Madden had a team-best six ground balls to go along with his 14 faceoff wins (14-of-20) with senior Josh Rose adding five ground balls. Senior Joey Boylston led the squad with a career-high tying three caused turnovers with freshman Luca Pivetta and sophomore Seamus McCarthy adding two each.
In goal, sophomore Colin Lenskold only allowed eight goals while in front of the cage, finishing the game with 10 saves. He also recorded two ground balls in the game.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The Utes started the game on a 3-0 run with goals from Plotts, Hyde and Bradbury, holding the Titans scoreless for almost the entire first quarter with Detroit Mercy scoring with just 13 seconds on the clock to make it 3-1.
Three of Lenskold's 10 saves came in the first quarter to keep the Titans at bay, sending the Utes into the second quarter with a two-goal lead.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Hart got the scoring going in the second quarter with a behind-the-back goal to make it 4-1. Detroit Mercy made it a two-point game a few minutes later, but Utah would counter with Stines' first goal of the game to give Utah a 5-2 advantage with 11:32 on the clock.
The Titans would score their final goal of the half at the 10:05 mark with the Utes keeping them out of the back of the net for the remainder of the quarter. Rose scored his first goal of the season with 5:32 remaining, giving Utah a three-goal lead heading into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The Utes would hold Detroit Mercy to just one goal in the third quarter, scoring four of their own. McMahon got things started to make it 8-3 with points from with goals from Hyde and Moyer following. DiPonio would drill in his second goal of the year and of his career with 17 seconds to go in the quarter, putting Utah up 11-4.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Bradbury struck first in the fourth quarter with Bradbury finding the back of the net to give Utah an eight-point lead, but Detroit Mercy would go on a 3-0 run to cut the Utes' lead to 12-7 with 11:06 to go in the game.
Utah answered in a big way, going on an 8-1 run with goals from Hyde, Stines, Jared Andreala, Plotts, Moyer, Bradbury and Luke Sganga to take a 20-8 lead with 4:11 remaining. Detroit Mercy was able to sneak its final goal in with 2:53 on the clock, but Luc Charbonnier would score Utah's final point with 21 seconds left, sealing Utah's 21-9 victory.
