ATHENS, Ga. –
Holly Waxman became the first member of the University of Utah swimming and diving team in more than 30 years to be named an All-American three times in one season and the first Utah diver to ever reach that goal by logging a 14th place finish in the women's platform on Saturday at the 2024 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Jack Bauerle Pool at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Georgia.
Waxman is the program's first three-time All-American since Jim Giottonini accomplished that feat in the 100 back, 200 back and 200 fly in 1991. This is the seventh time overall in program history a Ute has recorded such an achievement. She is also Utah's first diver and the first member of the women's team to realize such an accomplishment.
Waxman's feats made her one of only two women to finish in the top 16 at nationals in the 1m, 3m and platform and she helped the Utes collected 22 total points, the competition's seventh-highest total from just diving events and 25th overall.
"This was, without a doubt, the best meet we've had here," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "As a team and a program, we've made our mark on the national scene. We've been proving ourselves for 14 years and we made a statement this week."
Waxman earned a spot in the platform B final by posting a score of 252.90 in the preliminary round, good enough to earn her 15th place. Fellow Ute
Kathryn Grant, competing in her third event in three days just like Waxman, capped off a week of strong showings by placing 32nd with 223.65 points.
In the final, the native of Leeds, England collected 248.20 points. That mark moved Waxman up to 14th in the standings and capped off an incredible showing at the NCAA Championships.
"Holly was phenomenal all week," said Marschner. "She's one of two women to score in all three events. Two women out of 70 in this meet on the diving side. She was sensational the entire time. She's such a good leader and she's leading this team athletically everywhere. We're really set up for the future and I'm excited about what we have going ahead and really, really happy with our season."
