THIS WEEK
After inclement weather cancelled the last tournament on their schedule, the University of Utah men's golf team is preparing to compete in two tournaments in one week, starting with The Duck Invite, which will take place on Monday and Tuesday at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore., followed by The Goodwin, a three-day tournament set to be held from Thursday through Saturday at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
The Utes' last trip to Eugene was a successful one in the 2022, when they earned a second-place finish by shooting 2-under. Four Utah golfers posted top 10 finishes, led by Blake Tomlinson, who took fourth.
Javier Barcos also put up a top 10 finish, carding a 1-over 214 to tie for sixth after a performance that included a 6-under 65 in round two.
Braxton Watts climbed into the top 10 as well, securing a share of ninth.
A season ago, coach
Garrett Clegg took his squad to The Goodwin for the first time since 2018 and Barcos was the top finisher for Utah. The senior from Spain carded three straight 72's and finished with 13 consecutive pars that landed him in a tie for 60th.
UTAH LINE-UP
In both of these tournaments, the Utes will have the quintet of
Braxton Watts,
Javier Barcos,
Brandon Robison,
Gabriel Palacios and
Sergio Jimenez on the course.
COACHES THOUGHTS: Head Coach Garrett Clegg
"These are two great tournaments that we will be competing in on world class championship golf courses," said Clegg. "Eugene Country Club and Harding Park present a true test of golf. Our group of players know how to compete and I'm excited to see what they bring this week. We anticipate a lot of rain and bad weather both in Oregon and California and we need to be a group that can handle poor conditions. It's going to be a great week of golf, and hopefully we bring our best!"
THE FIELD
A total of 14 teams will be vying for the tournament title in Eugene and that list consists of No. 21 Illinois, No. 24 Oregon Boise State, Cal Poly, Colorado State, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Loyola Marymount, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, San Jose State, Utah and UTEP.
The Goodwin has long been one of the most competitive golf events in the nation, with the field in 2023 consisting of 28 teams and being won by then-No. 13 Oklahoma.
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The Duck Invite will begin with two rounds consisting of 36 holes on Monday, followed by the final 18 on Tuesday. The Eugene Country Club, which is consistently ranked as one of the top courses in the nation, will play host to The Duck Invite. The course covers 7,030 yards and is a par 72.
LAST TIME OUT
The Utes were originally supposed to play in Oregon at the Bandon Dunes Championships and they got off to an excellent start, shooting 4-under as a team over their first 13 holes.
Gabriel Palacios and
Sergio Jimenez were tied for the top spot at 3-under, while
Javier Barcos was also in the top 10 when the competition was halted due to bad weather.
The last completed event the Utes took part in was the Invitational at the Ford, which was held in Georgia on Feb. 26 – 27 and Barcos was the star of the show. He posted his highest finish of 2023-24, placing third, the seventh top five finish of his Utah career. Barcos was 7-under across 54 holes in Georgia, his lowest 54-hole mark of the season, and the fourth time in the last six tournaments he's been under par. Those efforts garnered him the first-ever Pac-12 Men's Golfer of the Week award in program history.
While Barcos leads the team with a 71.5 stroke average, right behind him at 71.6 is
Sergio Jimenez. The Utah freshman started the spring by posting a top-10 finish in Hawaii, then shot three straight rounds at even par in Georgia to tie for 20th. Over his last three events, Jimenez owns a 70.6 stroke average and has recorded three straight top 20 finishes. His five top-20 finishes overall in 2023-24 are tied with Barcos for the team-lead.
Robison played some of the best golf of his sophomore season at the Invitational at the Ford, also tying for third at 7-under. He began the competition with back-to-back 69's before carding a final round 71. Robison also ended the fall by shooting a 2-under 214 at the Visit Stockton Invite and he'll be aiming to post a red score for the third time in his last four tournaments. Watts was 2-over during Utah's most recent outing and will be attempting to recapture the form he showed at the John Burns Intercollegiate in early February, when he was 4-under, while Palacios has posted at least one score under 72 in all five tournaments he's played in 2023-24.
