SALT LAKE CITY – For the second straight year, the University of Utah swimming and diving team has had eight student-athletes selected for the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, it was announced on Tuesday.
Cameron Daniell,
Kathryn Grant,
Norah Hay,
Brandon Miller,
Parker McOmber,
Preston Planells,
Evan VanBrocklin and
Holly Waxman were all honored.
This number matches the most of any team in the nation, the second consecutive season the Utes can make that claim.
Daniell earned her spot on the list by crafting a 3.56 GPA while studying for a degree in Health & Kinesiology and her accomplishments in the pool include six total victories. Two of those came in Utah's February win over BYU and she earned a win in the 5K at the MPSF Open Water Championships as well. She continued her fine year at the Pac-12 Championships, where she placed eighth in the 1650 free, clocking in at 16:30.34.
Grant's fantastic sophomore season included a trip to the NCAA Championships, where she'd earned the right to compete in all three diving events after a spectacular showing at the NCAA Zone E Championships. At the Pac-12 Championships, Grant helped the Utes take first in the women's team diving event, then posted top eight finishes in the 1m and platform. She did all this while putting together a 3.95 GPA.
Few Utes won as often as
Norah Hay did in 2023-24, piling up nine first-place finishes while contributing to multiple relay triumphs. She also collected multiple victories in a meet more than once, including during Utah's clash with the Cougars. Like Daniell and Grant, she continued her excellent work at the conference championships, highlighted by her earning a spot in the 200 back A final. Her work in the pool is complimented by a 3.50 GPA while she pursues a Communications degree.
Miller's sophomore year included a performance against Wyoming in January in which he collected three victories and he ended the season with seven total wins. He added multiple times to Utah's all-time top 10 lists as well, including posting the quickest time in school history in the 400 IM while at the Pac-12 Championships. Miller's hard work also led to a 3.56 GPA as he majors in business.
McOmber completed a distinguished career for the Utes in 2023-24, one that included multiple Pac-12 Honor Roll selections and this stands as his second straight year on the CSC Academic All-District list. His list of accomplishments at the U also include posting the school's seventh-fastest time in the 100 backstroke and posting GPA of 3.56 while pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering.
Another Ute who excelled in the classroom was Planells, who did so to the tune of a 3.87 GPA and who is also making his second straight appearance on the CSC Academic All-District team. He did so while contributing to Utah victories over Wyoming, Colorado Mesa, UNLV and LSU. Planells was at his best in the 100 back during 2023-24, recording three top three finishes.
VanBrocklin has spent his time in the classroom studying for a Health and Kinesiology degree while earning a 3.74 GPA. In the pool, he logged eight wins and saved one of his best performances for Utah's home finale against USC. By taking the top spot in the 100 and 200 fly, he helped the Utes top the Trojans, 156 – 142. He capped off the season with a performance at the Pac-12 Championships that included breaking his own program record in the 200 fly with a time of 1:42.57.
Few Utes have ever put together a season as remarkable as
Holly Waxman's 2023-24 campaign. The junior from England became the first member of the Utah women's swimming and diving team to ever earn All-American honors in three different events, accomplishing that in the 1m, 3m and platform. Waxman was one of only two women to finish in the top 16 at nationals in all three competitions and her performance helped the Utes finish in the top 25 nationally. She did this while also excelling as a student, with a 3.70 GPA as she studies Biology.
In order to be eligible for the All-District Team, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and must have competed in at least 50% of their team's meets during the year. Additionally, they must have completed at least one full calendar year at their current institution. All eight Utah all-district choices are now up for CSC Academic All-American consideration.
