Utah closes out the season with a 4-2 win over Colorado

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis program claimed a 4-2 victory over Colorado Saturday afternoon. The Utes' record moved to 11-10 overall and 3-7 in the Pac-12.

The Utes fought in three tight doubles matches. On the No. 2 court, Samantha Horwood and Kat Lyman were defeated 6-4 by Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura. Then, Sara Akid and Kaila Barksdale battled into an intense tiebreak on the third court, but ultimately succumbed to Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson 7-6(5), which allowed the Buffs to claim the doubles point. On the No. 1 court, Marcela Lopez and Ana Luiza Cruz were also engaged in a close tiebreak, however, the match was left unfinished at 6-6(4-3). Â
The Utes gained momentum once singles competition began. Lopez claimed a 6-0, 6-3 victory on court No. 2 over Ventura. Then, Lyman topped Betina Tokac 6-2, 6-1 on the fourth court. On the No. 6 court, Akid put the Utes in a winning position with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Pia Rebec. However Barksdale, on the third court, was defeated by Stanojevic 7-5, 6-1, which moved the match score to 3-2.Â
Battling in the No. 1 spot was Yuhan Liu, who claimed a strong first-set victory 6-2 over Aya El Sayed. After Liu dropped the second set 6-2, she fought in her third set into extra games. She overcame the deficit in the third and clinched the match victory for the Utes with a 7-5 win over El Sayed.
Emma Kamper fought on the fifth court, but her match was left unfinished at 7-6(7-5), 5-5.
UP NEXT
The Utes will next head to Ojai, Calif. for the Pac-12 Championship tournament as the No. 8 seed. The Utes will take on the No. 9 seeded Colorado Buffs, Wednesday, April 25 at 10 a.m. (MT).Â
