DALLAS – University of Utah junior left-hander and closer
Micah Ashman has been named to the Midseason Watch List for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award. Now in its 19
th season, the award is presented to the top relief pitcher in college baseball.
Â
A native of nearby Sandy, Utah, Ashman is one of five Pac-12 pitchers to make the list—after also being named to the Midseason Watch List as a sophomore in 2023.
Â
His 10 saves during the 2024 season lead all Power Conference pitchers and rank third overall in the nation. It also is two away from tying the single-season program record at Utah. Ashman already owns the program's career record for saves, now with 19 in his three seasons as a Ute--the most of all active pitchers in the Pac-12 Conference.
Â
His program-record-setting 18
th career save came on April 5 vs. CSUN, passing former record holder Tyler Wagner (17 saves from 2010-12).
Â
Ashman has made 19 appearances on the season and has a 2.53 earned run average in 21.1 innings pitched--striking out 20 batters against just three walks and holding opposing hitters to a .224 batting average. The No. 22-ranked relief pitcher in the country by D1Baseball.com has not allowed an inherited runner to score in any of his 10 saves this season.
Â
As a sophomore in '23, he finished the regular season with nine saves, the second-most in the Pac-12 and most by a Utah pitcher since 2016. Ashman pitched 34.2 innings over his 23 relief appearances last year, finishing with a 1-3 record, 3.63 ERA and 38 strikeouts against only five walks.
Finalists for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award will be named on June 5 and the winner will be announced on June 14 at the Men's College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
