LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Utah baseball team trailed 7-1 and erased the six-run deficit, but Kansas pulled away late to take another back-and-forth ballgame by a 13-9 score on Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark.
Â
Utah (16-13, 5-7 Big 12) trailed by a 7-1 score after three innings, but like its previous two games stayed resilient and had a goal to chip away in the fourth. The Utes did just that—racking up a six-spot on the way to leveling the score at seven.
Â
Every batter in the Utah starting lineup had a hit by the end of the fourth inning, part of a day that saw the Utes combine for eight extra-base hits (six doubles, two home runs). Four players had multi-hit efforts, highlighted by two doubles apiece from
Matt Flaharty and
Cal Miller, plus a home run each from
Luke Jacobs and
Nevan Noonan.
Â
The Utes led off the fourth inning with back-to-back doubles from
Jet Gilliam and Flaharty, before the doubles parade later continued with a two-bagger that Miller landed in shallow left field.
Jack Kleveno followed by lacing a single through the mound and up the middle as Miller came in to score from second base.
Â
Still with just one out, Jacobs worked the count to 1-2 before sending the next pitch 382 feet for a two-run homer over the right field fence; suddenly the Utah deficit was just one run at 7-6. Four batters later, Gilliam was back up and beat out a bang-bang play at first base. The call stood after video review, not only giving Gilliam his second hit of the inning but scoring
Jake Long and tying the score at seven.
Â
Dylan Gazaway came on for Utah in relief of
Anson McGorman to begin the bottom of the fourth, working around a walk to keep things all square at seven.
Â
Then in the fifth, the Utes pulled in front for the first time. Miller had his second double in as many innings, then after a pair of walks Long took a bases-loaded bean ball to score Miller and put Utah ahead 8-7.
Â
Though the Utes added another run in the seventh, Kansas came surging back with a four-run seventh inning aided by a pair of Utah errors. KU led 13-9 after seven innings.
Â
Flaharty had a ground-rule double in the top of the eighth, but that would be all for Utah as the Jayhawks closed out the game from there.
