SALT LAKE CITY –
Jos Smith has been promoted to the position of associate head coach, University of Utah swimming and diving head coach
Jonas Persson announced on Monday.
The 2024-25 campaign will be Smith's seventh season at Utah and he's spent his time in Salt Lake City helping the team's swimmers put up numerous personal-bests and program records, as well as achieving national recognition.
"I'm so excited to promote Jos," said Persson. "He's a world class coach, is very well respected, and he truly is a partner with me leading this team. Jos works really hard, is very self-motivated and gets the job done. He treats our athletes the right way and they know he cares about them. I'm excited to keep going in the exciting trajectory that we are on, and continue to enjoy what Jos brings to this program."
"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to continue to work for such an incredible university and swim program," said Smith. "I would like to thank Jonas, the staff, and our student athletes for their trust and belief in me. I feel that the future of the program is very bright and I look forward to competing in the Big 12 and NCAA."
The list of individuals coached by Smith during his time at Utah includes two-time All-American
Jaek Horner, who Smith helped tutor for four seasons leading up to his spectacular 2023-24 campaign. Horner smashed school records in the 100 and 200 breast during his senior year and posted a slew of first place finishes before recording one more phenomenal performance at the NCAA Men's Swimming Championships. Horner achieved an 11th place finish at Nationals in the 100 breast, becoming the first Ute to ever garner All-American recognition in that event.
In 2021-22, Smith saw his 200-medley relay team of Andrei Ungur,
Jaek Horner, Cooper deRyk and Finn O'Haimhirgin set a new school record of 1:23.62 to place 16th at the NCAA Championships and earn All-American honors. The Utes broke the previous school record just three weeks prior at the Pac-12 Championships. Later at the championships, the 400-medley relay group of Ungur, Horner, O'Haimhirgin and Ben Waterman also broke their own program-best set just weeks before at the conference event, re-breaking the record with a time of 3:05.84.
In 2019-20, Smith guided former Ute standout Audrey Reimer to school records in the 100 and 200 backstroke, while she went on to earn All-American honors after logging NCAA qualifying times before the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Reimer posted the school records at the Pac-12 Championships to lead the Utah women, breaking the 100 back time that had stood since 2012 in the leg of the 400-medley relay and breaking her own 200 back time by more than two seconds.
