THIS WEEK
The University of Utah Men's Golf team will look to continue its hot start to the season with a trip to Sammamish, Wash., for The Tindall.
The Utes have competed at Aldarra Golf Course once before as the Pac-12 Championship was located there in 2022. The only current Ute to have competed in the tournament was
Braxton Watts. This team performance was the fifth-best Pac-12 Championship score the Utes had posted, finishing tied for eighth.
In the season-opening tournament, the Utes traveled to Pullman, Wash., for the Palouse Collegiate and recorded historic numbers. As a team, Utah tied the school record for the lowest team score in a single round of play during the first round (266) and later added the third-lowest team score in program history during the second round (267). This led to the Utes breaking the previous 36-hole team score school record, putting together a score of 533 to outshoot the former record by 11 strokes. After another exceptional round on Wednesday, the Utes shattered the 54-hole school record, totaling a score of 800 to dethrone the team score of 833 at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in 2021.
Sergio Jimenez and
Gabriel Palacios led the Utes individually as Jimenez earned his first collegiate title. In the first round, Jimenez carded a score of 10-under 61 to notch the lowest 18-hole individual score in Utah golf history before breaking the school record for best 54-hole score with a 21-under 192. Palacios finished second in the tournament the highest finish of his collegiate career. This performance included a final score of 15-under 198, the second-best 54-hole score in program history behind Jimenez.
After an incredible effort in Pullman, the Utes are now ranked 24
th in this week's Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll, jumping into the ranks after being unranked prior.
THE FIELD
The Utes will be one of 14 teams participating at Aldarra Golf Course as two other top 25 teams will tee off alongside Utah with premiere programs in the clubhouse. The rest of the field includes #RV Oregon, Oregon State, #RV San Diego State, Seattle University, Saint Mary's, Cal, #RV UCLA, #RV South Carolina, #13 Arizona, #25 Pepperdine, #RV Ohio State, Nevada, and host #RV Washington.
UTAH'S LINE-UP
The Utes' lineup will consist of five golfers, using the same set of competitors that took home the Palouse Collegiate title earlier this month. Utah will send out
Brandon Robison,
Braxton Watts,
Davis Johnson,
Sergio Jimenez, and
Gabriel Palacios.
COACHES THOUGHTS
"We're really excited to get back and going," said head coach
Garrett Clegg. "We know this week will be a completely different challenge for us. Aldarra is a great golf course, each of these five golfers played there last fall in a practice round. That was a fun round of golf, but not tournament golf with tournament hole locations. It should be a great week!"
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The first 36 holes will be played on Monday before the field rounds out the tournament with one final round starting on Tuesday morning.
