SAMMAMISH, Wash. – The No. 24 University of Utah Men's Golf team finished off a stellar 54-hole tournament at The Tindall on Tuesday, taking home the title to secure its second victory in as many tournaments to start the season. The unit was led by
Davis Johnson who put together the strongest tournament of his career to earn a share for first place for his first collegiate title.
"It was an amazing tournament by
Davis Johnson, I'm so happy for him," said head coach
Garrett Clegg. "He works extremely hard and has built himself into a great player. For him to play and compete that way this week was incredibly impressive!"
"For the second tournament in a row, we started the final round with the lead and had the round of the day. It was even more amazing as a team that we only made one bogey among the five players on the front nine. It was a brilliant first nine holes of golf and set the tone for the final round. Having each of our players shoot in the 60's and Brandon coming in huge with a 64 showcased how strong each of these players are. It was a lot of fun as a coach to see these boys compete!"
The Utes' victory marks their second tournament title of the season after taking home the Palouse Collegiate trophy earlier this month. Utah was sensational from start to finish, concluding the first round just one stroke out of first place and later finished day one ahead of the rest of the field before continuing its hot hand into the third round. Tuesday's final round was a dominating 13-under 271, the lowest round of golf by any team during the tournament. All five Utes finished inside the top 30, while three Utes ranked inside the top 5. This was the first time in school history that Utah has won back-to-back tournaments in a season. Utah topped two additional ranked teams while also besting six teams that received votes in the most recent coaches' poll.
Johnson came into the final round of golf at the Aldarra Golf Course leading the field after finishing day one 9-under. The redshirt junior got his final 18 holes started with three birdies on the front nine, all coming between the 4
th and 7
th holes. The back half of the course added some challenges for Johnson, carding a double bogey on the 10
th hole before responding with two red marks. Johnson's tournament came to an end after a bogey put him 1-over on the back half and 2-under for the round to finish tied for first place. In the best tournament of his collegiate career, Johnson closed things out 11-under 202. The Scottsdale, Arizona, native has had incredible success at the Aldarra Golf Course in his career, posting his previous career-best of 9-under 207 at last season's Husky Invitational. It's just the fourth time in school history that multiple Utes have won a regular season title in the same season after
Sergio Jimenez won the Palouse Collegiate to start the season.
Jimenez was right behind Johnson all tournament long, sitting tied for eighth after round one before jumping into second after round two and finishing in third to conclude the tournament. Jimenez recorded one score under par through the front nine, posting 2-under. The back nine also included two birdies to place him 4-under, but back-to-back bogeys on the final two holes shifted the sophomore out of a tie for first and into third. The Palouse Collegiate champion finished one stroke out of first place with a 10-under 203, the second lowest of his career.
Brandon Robison catapulted up the leaderboard in the final 18 holes of the tournament, using a stellar front nine to build momentum. Robison started the day with an even score before racking up three consecutive birdies. After a bogey, the junior added another red mark to head into the back nine 4-under. Robison totaled seven even scores across the back half of the course, but an eagle on the 12
th hole allowed an 18-spot jump into fifth place to record the third top-5 finish of his career. His 7-under 64 was the lowest third-round score of any competitor and marked the lowest 18-hole score of his collegiate career.
Both
Braxton Watts and
Gabriel Palacios climbed up the ranks on the final day at Aldarra, as Watts jumped six spots while Palacios moved up 16 spots. Watts was right on the mark all day, finishing level through the first half of the course and using a pair of red cards to close out the final 18 holes at 2-under 64. This matched his first-round performance and closed his stat line at 1-under 212 with a share of 25
th place. Palacios was just one stroke behind Watts for the tournament, totaling three birdies in the front nine but jumped around in the back nine with a birdie, an eagle, a bogey, and a triple bogey to finish 2-under for the day and even with par for the tournament. The sophomore tied for 28
th on the final leaderboard.
