THIS WEEK
The Utah Men's Golf Team is set jump over the Rocky Mountains to Erie, Colo., for the 14
th annual Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, making its eighth appearance at the tournament.
The Utes made their first appearance at the tournament during the 2010-11 before competing last in 2021-22. In recent years, Utah has been a force to be reckoned with in Colorado, winning the tournament in 2017-18 and placing second in 2018-19 and again in 2021-22. The first-place finish was the first time in more than 25 years that Utah earned both individual and team titles in the same tournament. Junior Kyler Dunkle earned the program's first regular-season individual title since 2006, while guiding the Utes to the program's first team title since Sept. 29, 2009.
In its latest participation at the Mark Simpson Collegiate, Utah finished in a tie for second as three Utes placed inside the top 25 after shooting 36-under (828), the fourth-lowest 54-hole team score in program history.
LAST TIME OUT
The Utes took home the Tindall Invitational title last week to mark their second tournament victory of the season after raising the Palouse Collegiate trophy to start the season. This was the first time in school history that Utah has won back-to-back tournaments in a season. Utah topped two additional ranked teams while also besting six teams who received votes in the most recent coaches' poll. Utah was sensational from start to finish, concluding the first round just one stroke out of first place and later finished day one ahead of the rest of the field before continuing its hot hand into the third round. The final round finished as a dominating 13-under 271, the lowest round of golf by any team during the tournament. All five Utes finished inside the top 30 while three Utes ranked inside the top 5.
Utah was led by
Davis Johnson who put together the strongest tournament of his career to earn a share for first place for his first title. Johnson came into the final round of golf at the Aldarra Golf Course leading the field after finishing day one 9-under. Johnson closed out the 54-hole tournament 11-under 202. It's just the fourth time in school history that multiple Utes have won a regular season title in the same season after
Sergio Jimenez won the Palouse Collegiate to start the season.
THE FIELD
Utah will battle for the tournament title alongside 18 other teams as Colorado and Utah will be the only Big 12 schools competing. On the course will be Air Force, Boise State, Central Arkansas, Colorado Mines, Colorado State, Creighton, CSU Fullerton, Denver, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, St. Mary's, Southern Utah, Tarleton State, Utah, Utah State, UTEP, Valparaiso, and Wyoming.
UTAH'S LINE-UP
The Utes will send six golfers to compete in Colorado as the same five Utes from the previous two tournaments will participate as a part of the team. The unit consists of
Braxton Watts,
Brandon Robison,
Sergio Jimenez,
Davis Johnson, and
Gabriel Palacios. Freshman
Rex Wilson will make his collegiate debut and compete as an individual.
COACHES THOUGHTS
"We are excited to be in Colorado and back on the golf course" said head coach
Garrett Clegg. "Colorado National is a course that presents a different challenge than the other courses we have played this year. You can still shoot low scores, however there are a lot more penalty areas throughout the course, so we need to drive the ball really well this week to have success."
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The field will rattle off 36 holes on Monday with a shotgun start beginning at 8:15 am MT before the final 18 holes will conclude the tournament on Tuesday with a shotgun start in the morning.
