THIS WEEK
The University of Utah Men's Golf team is set to begin their inaugural Big 12 season with a trip to the Evergreen State for the Palouse Collegiate. The tournament is hosted at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman, Wash., by former Pac-12 foe Washington State.
It won't be the first time that the Utes will compete at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course as Utah was there for the Pac-12 Championships in 2015 before opening the 2016-17 season in Pullman for the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate. The 2016-17 season was the only time the program has opened up a season in Washington as the Utes put together a phenomenal team performance with a second place finish while shooting nine-over, just behind Washington State.
The Utes are set to return six of the nine golfers on the roster this season, including senior Braxton Watts who made it to the final round of play at the NCAA Championships last season. Watts was the third Ute in the last six seasons to earn the chance to play in all four rounds of stroke play, joining Tristan Mandur, who tied for 17th in 2021, and Kyler Dunkle, who earned a share of 28th in 2019.
Alongside Watts, senior Peter Jung, junior Brandon Robison, and redshirt junior Davis Johnson will round out the team's upperclassmen while sophomores Sergio Jimenez and Gabriel Palacios will enter their second year of play.
Watts and Robison add critical experience to the team with the two holding the most tournament experience on the roster. Watts competed in 13 tournaments last season while recording his first collegiate victory at The Goodwin in March, besting a field of 168 golfers by shooting a 5-under 205. Robison tallied 13 tournaments as well, including participating in all nine spring events. Over the course of the season, Robison shot 10-under at the Gaucho Invitational in April to take second, the highest finish of his Utah career before earning a share of 50th at NCAA Regionals and tied for the team's lowest second round score with a 1-under 70.
Sergio Jimenez is a pivotal piece to this Utes' roster after collecting a handful of accolades in his freshman year. The native of Madrid, Spain participated in 14 events during his first year as a Ute and piled up nine top 20 finishes which tied for the most on the squad. He also achieved the highest finish ever by a Utah freshman at the Pac-12 Tournament, tying for 15th. To round out the season, Jimenez tied for 20th at NCAA Regionals with a score of 1-over to help the Utes reach the NCAA Championships. Additionally, Palacios proved to be an exceptional addition to the Utes team as the sophomore finished in the top 10 in his first collegiate tournament, tying for ninth at 4-under on Sept. 11 and was Utah's highest finisher at NCAA Regionals, moving up from 49th after round one to tie for 12th by finishing at 1-under.
Utah adds a trio of freshmen to its roster as Trey Moore, Kade McDonough, and Rex Wilson will begin their collegiate careers with the Utes this fall.
In 2023, the Utes reached the NCAA Championships for the second time in three seasons. It marked just the second time in program history Utah had reached the NCAA Championships multiple times in such a short span, an opportunity they earned after placing fourth at the NCAA Austin Regional, their best regional showing in school history.
THE FIELD
Utah will be joined by 14 other programs in Pullman, including Big 12 mate Colorado and fellow Beehive State program, Utah Valley. Alongside the Utes and a pair of familiar faces, host Washington State, Cal State Northridge, Gonzaga, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon State, Pacific, Sacramento State, San Jose State, Seattle, UC San Diego, and Wyoming will all face off in Pullman.
UTAH'S LINE-UP
Utah will send six golfers to the Palouse Collegiate, all returners from last season. The five Utes taking swings for the first lineup of the season consists of Braxton Watts, Davis Johnson, Gabriel Palacios, Brandon Robison, and Sergio Jimenez while Peter Jung is set to compete as an individual.
COACHES THOUGHTS
The Utes are led by head coach Garrett Clegg, beginning the 2024 campaign in his eighth season as the program's head. "I'm extremely excited to get the season going," said Clegg.
"We have had a great couple of weeks of qualifying and coming together as a team. This is a great group of young men. We have a truly experienced team traveling to Washington State and they're all comfortable with each other. Palouse Ridge is a fun golf course and should be a good place for us to begin our season."
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The tournament will cover 54 holes across two days with 36 holes being played on Tuesday while the final 18 will conclude the tournament on Wednesday. Tuesday's action will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. MT and Wednesday's final round of play will commence with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. MT.
