IRVING, Texas – The University of Utah swimming and diving team earned a pair of Big 12 Weekly Awards after
Elias Petersen's two top finishes and
Holly Waxman's elite performance at the Utah Diving Invitational were rewarded with the men's Diver of the Week and women's co-Diver of the Week titles, the conference released Friday.
From Jan. 10-11, the Utah divers competed at the Utah Diving Invitational in their home pool in Salt Lake City. Over the course of two days,
Elias Petersen brought in two first place finishes, while
Holly Waxman accumulated one gold medal and one silver medal.
Petersen had to work for his first gold, earning a place in the 1m finals but he was seeded third. From the first round in finals, Petersen showed his fire, with his first dive, an inward 2 ½ tuck earning 69.75 points. He finished with a total score of 375.25 and another first-place finish.
The junior's second gold medal appeared after his six-dive list on the three-meter springboard. The Malmo, Sweden native earned a spot in the 3m finals as the top seed with a preliminary score of 380.23. In the finals, Petersen averaged 62.2 points a dive. His outlier came in the second round, when his front 2 ½ with a full twist, or full-out, added 67.50 points to his final score of 373.75. This score not only put him in first, but put him more than 44 points ahead of second-place.
On the women's side, Waxman's silver medal came on the 3m springboard after earning a final score of 303.45. In the 3m final, the senior averaged 50.5 points on each dive. Sitting in third when the final round started, Waxman pulled out a showstopper, adding 58.50 points to her overall score after her full-out.
On the 1m, the Leeds, England native finished in the top spot in both prelims and finals. Showcasing her consistency, Waxman finished prelims with 292.45 and finals with 292.25, just 0.2 of a difference. In finals, Waxman's highest-scoring dive came in the final round with a front 2 ½ pike bringing in 54.60 points.
Looking into overall totals, both Petersen and Waxman were the highest-scoring divers of their respective sides. Petersen brought Utah 40 points and Waxman added 37, both of which contributed to a Utes diving win over BYU, UCLA and Wisconsin.
This is the fourth and fifth time Utah divers have been awarded Big 12 Diver of the Week honors. The last Utah diver to earn the title was Waxman on Jan. 3 for her performance in the Auburn Diving invite.
Petersen, Waxman and the rest of the dive team are traveling to Berkeley, Calif. for the Cal Diving Invite at the University of California, Berkeley on Jan. 16-18.
