WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — The fifth-ranked Red Rocks broke out in a big way on Monday night at the Maverik Center, posting a 197.950 to win the Best of Utah meet and tying Oklahoma for the highest score in the nation this season.
Junior
Makenna Smith won the all-around with a career-high 39.725, fueled by event wins on vault, beam and floor, and senior
Grace McCallum finished second in the all-around with a 39.600, with a win on bars and tying Smith on floor. Smith's all-around score is tied for the second-highest in the nation thus far in 2025.
Utah's 197.950 matched the Sooners' winning score from two weeks ago at the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad for highest in the nation on the young season, and delivered a win for the Red Rocks on Monday against in-state foes Southern Utah (196.175), Utah State (196.000) and BYU (195.750).
"What a fantastic night," said head coach
Carly Dockendorf. "I think one of the highlights was seeing our team complete four events—just do a complete meet. We haven't done that yet. I loved their composure all night. I thought they stayed confident and relaxed, but really focused."
Sophomore
Camie Winger competed in the all-around for the first time in her career and posted an impressive 39.475 to finish third. Her performance included a career-high 9.925 on floor to share the event win with McCallum and Smith.
Utah was fantastic from the start, earning four 9.90s on bars and recording all scores of 9.90 or higher. The first came from Smith in the leadoff position, then from
Ana Padurariu,
Ashley Glynn and
Amelie Morgan at Nos. 3-5. For Smith and Padurariu it was a season high on the apparatus, while Morgan tied a career high and Glynn tied her career high for the second week in a row. McCallum anchored the event for Utah with a strong 9.925 to win the event and elevate Utah to its highest score on any event this season with a 49.525.
After one rotation, Utah led the way with that sterling score, followed by Southern Utah (49.100 on vault), BYU (49.025 on beam) and Utah State (48.950 on floor).
The Red Rocks matched their terrific bars rotation with an impressive performance on beam, logging another 49.525 to tie their best rotation score of the season. Smith's event-leading 9.95 in the No. 3 position was a career high on beam, while Morgan followed with a season-high 9.925 and McCallum tied her season high with a 9.90 at No. 5. Winger added a 9.90 at No. 2, as Utah extended its lead at the midway point of the meet.
Utah remained in first at 99.050, followed by SUU (98.150), Utah State (98.00) and BYU (97.700).
Three career highs on floor highlighted an exceptional rotation for the Red Rocks, who hit their third consecutive 49.525 to begin the meet. Smith led off with one of three 9.925s for Utah, followed by Winger, whose 9.925 was a career high. McCallum, in the fifth position, delivered the third 9.925, while Glynn's 9.90 was a career high at No. 4, as was
Sarah Krump's 9.85 in the anchor position.
Utah finished the third rotation at 148.575, followed by Utah State (146.950), SUU 146.800 and BYU (146.500).
The Red Rocks polished off their sterling performance on vault, with all scores at 9.85 or above, highlighted by Smith's career-high-tying 9.95.
Ella Zirbes led off the event by tying her season high with a 9.875, followed by four 9.850s—wrapped around Smith's event-winning performance—earned by McCallum, Winger, Glynn and Morgan.
"Just another really great opportunity for us to be in the Maverik (Center)," said Dockendorf. "It's where we're going to be for the Big 12 Championships. Overall, I love how everyone stepped up. People took on new roles. Maybe it was a cheering role today, when they were used to competing, or maybe they went from being a cheerleader to competing, and everyone just brought their very best at whatever their new role was tonight."
The impressive performance by the Red Rocks came at a key time, just three days after a home win against Iowa State with a then-season-high 197.300, and four days ahead of a Big 12 Conference rivalry rematch with BYU.
