IRVING, Texas – The University of Utah swimming and diving team earned it's fourth Big 12 Weekly Award after
Holly Waxman's top performance at the Auburn Diving Invitational was rewarded with the women's Diver of the Week title, the conference released Friday.
From Dec. 18-21, the Utah divers competed at the Auburn Diving Invitational in Auburn, Ala. Over the course of four days, Waxman accumulated two silver medals and earned a place in the top-12 finals on every event.
The Leeds, England native started on the one-meter springboard, scoring 300.15 and earning the top-spot going into finals. In finals, she was just edged out of first, taking the silver medal just three points shy, totaling her score to 292.15. On day three, Waxman took on the three-meter springboard and again, was the number one seed heading into finals. In finals, she scored a total of 314.65, coming in second to a Florida State student-athlete. On the final day of competition, Waxman competed on the tower event. Though her five-dive list scored 220.35 and put her in ninth-place going in to finals, she inevitably scratched due to some underlying injuries.
Waxman was the second-highest scoring diver of the meet, accumulating 38 points towards the Utah women's overall score. Her twelve-dive list, the total scores of the six dives in prelims in addition to the six dives in finals, was the highest of all the competing female student-athletes on both the 1m and 3m.
This is the fourth Big 12 weekly honor awarded to Utah swim and dive program this season and the third to be awarded to a Utah diver.
Waxman and the rest of the swim and dive team will take on Colorado Mesa, Wisconsin, BYU and UCSB on Jan. 10-11 in the Ute Natatorium.
