AUSTIN, Texas – A trio of Utah divers reached final rounds in the opening day of the Texas Diving Invitational on Thursday inside the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Elias Petersen placed eighth in the men's 1-meter finals while
Kathryn Grant and
Callie Eaglestone came in fifth and 11th, respectively, on the women's 3-meter.
"We had a really strong start to the meet," head diving coach
Richard Marschner said. "Everybody competed really well and competed within themselves. We had some great performances with several finals."
Utah was one of four schools to have multiple divers in the 3-meter finals after Grant and Eaglestone made it through qualifying with scores of 282.00 and 279.60, respectively. Grant scored a 298.25 in finals, moving up four spots from the quarterfinal round to finish fifth overall, while Eaglestone's 270.40 was good enough for 11th place.
"Taking fifth in this meet against all this top-20 competition is very impressive," Marschner added.
After finishing eighth in the men's 1-meter preliminary round with a 322.10, Petersen could move no higher in the final round, placing eighth again with a 329.45 list score. He was the lone Utah man to reach the final round. At the 2024 Texas Diving Invitational, Petersen failed to reach the finals on the 1-meter, placing 18th in prelims, but placed sixth on the 3-meter.
"We're looking forward to tomorrow," Marschner said.
