COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Utah cross country team finished 17th-overall as a team at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on a brisk morning at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course.
The 17th-place finish is the fourth-best finish in program history – all of which have been under the direction of 21st-year head coach
Kyle Kepler.
Erin Vringer, running in her second championships race, led Utah once again with a time of 19:38.2 for 59th-place – which was good for a new PR mark. The junior made a huge jump between the third and fourth kilometer, passing 20 competitors before passing another 10 in the final 1000m to cross as Utah's low stick. Fellow teammate
Annastasia Peters was the next-best finisher for the Utes, crossing the finish line at 19:54.3 for 88th-place.
Both Vringer and Peters finished the 6000m course under 20 minutes – which marked just the fifth and sixth time a Ute has ran a sub-20 time at the championships. Vringer's time of 19:38.2 is the second-fastest by a Ute at the championships behind only Grayson Murphy – who finished in 19:36.27 (2017) for eighth-overall at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. Meanwhile, Peters' time of 19:54.3 is the fourth-fastest time by a Ute and was just .3 shy of passing Emily Venters (19:54.1) for third. It is also the first time in program history that the Women of Utah have had two runners finish with a sub-20 time at the championships.
Millie Wilcox was the third Ute to cross the finish line, recording a new PR time of 20:00.1 for 110th-overall in her first NCAA Championships race and less than six months removed from joining the distance team after spending her first three collegiate seasons on the sprints team.
Also running in her first collegiate race was freshman
Emily Junginger, who finished with a huge PR run of 20:13.8 (150th-overall) as Utah's fourth scorer.
Kyla Martin was the fifth and final scorer for the Women of Utah – posting a run of 20:22.7 (164th) that was just shy of her PR.
Bri Rinn also notched a new PR in her first championships race, notching a time of 20:46.8 while
Lindsey Peters wrapped things up for the Utes on the course at 20:47.6.
