PRINCETON, N.J. –
Kathryn Grant set the pool record and won on platform as the University of Utah diving program wrapped up competition at the Big Al Invitational on Saturday.
Grant won the women's competition with a personal-best 308.80, the second-best mark in program history. She is just third Utah woman and the first since 2017 to eclipse the 300-point mark. Grant had previously set the pool record back in 2022, but reclaimed the record after it was broken by Pitt's Mariana Osario Mendoza last year.
"Katherine was lights-out today," head diving coach
Richard Marschner said. "She set a PB in prelims and outdid herself in finals setting a pool record. She keeps getting better every day as a senior, she's certainly not plateauing, she just keeps getting better and it's really exciting to watch her do her work."
Callie Eaglestone and
Cierra Cole logged top-five finishes on the women's side as well. Just like they did on the 1-meter springboard finals on Friday, Grant and Eaglestone finished one-two in prelims with scores of 291.05 and 225.50, respectively. Cole finished just behind them in fourth with a 209.85, while fellow freshman
Annalise Shrader placed six in the qualifying round with a 191.00. Eaglestone finished finals in fourth with a 219.65, one spot ahead of Cole's 195.45. Shrader came in seventh with a 177.85.
The freshman duo of Cole and Shrader both earned personal bests for the second day in a row.
On the men's side, the Utes finished in second, third and fourth in both prelims and finals.
Attila Bernatsky's personal-best 320.95 put him in second, just eight points off the lead and seven points ahead of
Alex Just's 313.50 third-place score in prelims, while
Elias Petersen posted a 302.80 to take fourth. In finals, Bernatsky scored a 303.50 to keep his second-place spot while Petersen jumped into third with a 290.95. Just logged a 287.70 list score to finish fourth.
"The guys were great today," Marschner said. "All three of them getting their zone score is a nice accomplishment so we can focus on perfecting our dives rather than worrying about the results too much.
"We accomplished everything we needed to, and it sets us up really well for the second half of the season," he added.
Looking Ahead
The Utah diving program is back in action on Monday, Dec. 15. The women of Utah will compete against FIU and Marshall while the men's squad will square off with FAU. Both meets will be held at the Doral Aquatic Center in Miami.
