LAS VEGAS – Part of the University of Utah's swim program finished their first day at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas First Chance Meet, reaching six first-place finishes and a Utah top 10 time on Friday night at the Buchanan Natatorium.
Eleven Utes made an appearance at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas First Chance Meet, hoping to reach an NCAA B-Cut to qualify for post-season meets.
"I'm really happy with the way our athletes competed today," said assistant coach
Brody Lewis. "We had a handful of best time from our crew and I expect even more tomorrow."
Going Home with a Gold
- Davis Stachelek and Will Woodall tied for the gold in the 50-freestyle, with both Utes clocking in at 20.11.
- Jake Baker was in a league of his own as he finished the 500-yard freestyle at 4:37.46, taking the first-place spot.
- In the 100-yard butterfly, Jackson Kehler took the top spot with a time of 47.84.
- Stachelek came back for his second gold, finishing the 100-yard freestyle at 43.42. This time would also mark his name in the Utah record book as the sixth-fastest time in program history.
- In the 200-yard breaststroke, Gannon Flynn took the top spot with a 2:01.79.
Just Kept Swimming
- Abby Pope was the first up to the block for the Utes, where she swam the 500-yard freestyle and finished at 4:59.74.
- Lauren Greenwell tied for seventh in the 50-yard free, touching the wall at 25.22, before taking the silver in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:24.01.
- In the 50-free, Layton Sealman finished the race at 20.89, just before Kellen Cameron at 21.08.
- Kellen Cameron swam the 100-free, taking silver with a time of 45.15.
- Swimming a 1:47.52, Nate Decker took second-place in the 200-yard backstroke.
- Landon Nava brought home a silver in the 200-breast after finishing with a 2:03.42.
"This is a great meet for these individuals to set the tone for our team as we kickoff our championship season, " said Lewis, "And that mixed with Valentine's day means, 'Roses are red, violets are blue, we're going to swim fast, with or without you'."
Looking Ahead
The Utes have one more session in Las Vegas, while the divers take on UCLA hoping to reach some NCAA Zones qualifying scores on Saturday, Feb. 15.
