IRVING, Texas – The University of Utah swimming and diving team was awarded two conference weekly awards, women's Swimmer of the Week and men's Co-Newcomer of the Week, after taking down the University of Wyoming, the Big 12 released today.
On Jan. 31, the Utah swim team traveled to Green River, Wyo. to compete against the University of Wyoming Cowboys, where both the men's and women's teams came out on top. Junior
Erin Palmer broke a program record and freshman
Quinn Jones found two medals, distinguishing themselves in the eyes of the conference.
This week's Big 12 Swimmer of the Week, Palmer, earned two individual golds before helping her team to two top finishes in the 400-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Bismarck, N.D. native's first individual gold came in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall at 1:00.40 and successfully an 11-year-old Utah record. In the 100-yard freestyle, the junior finished on top yet again with a time of 49.98.
Palmer continued to rack up medals, swimming the freestyle leg of the 400-medley relay, contributing a 100-yard sprint time of 49.00 to their overall finish of 3:41.35. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Palmer started the race off for the Utes with a 50-free of 22.54, helping Utah to its final gold of the meet.
On the men's side, Jones was awarded the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, sharing the honor with Joey Stebbins, a swimmer from the University of West Virginia.
Jones walked away from the Cowboys with a gold and a silver, after dominating the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 500-free. The freshman found his first medal after finishing the 1,000 three seconds before the next swimmer, touching the wall at 9:25.69 and dropping almost seven seconds from his seeded time. In the 500, the Folson, Californian finished his race at 4:34.83, just 0.83 behind the top time of the meet, claiming his second medal.
With these two awards, the program has accumulated nine Big 12 weekly honors.
Palmer and Jones are still at work, prepping for the arrival of BYU. The rivalry meet will be held in the Ute Natatorium, beginning on Friday night at 5 p.m. and continuing Saturday at 11 a.m., with Senior recognition taking place at 10:30 a.m.
