FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The University of Utah divers finished the final day of competition at NCAA Zone E with three more student-athletes finding a place at NCAA Championships on Wednesday afternoon in Federal Way, Wash.
On the third day of the NCAA Zone E Championships, three Utes qualified for a spot at the NCAA Championship, all adding to their previous events. With the top 18 of each event moving on to finals, five Utah divers pushed on for a second list.
The scores at Zones are cumulative, meaning the divers carry their preliminary scores over and the finals totals are added on top. In today's event, the top seven men in finals qualify for NCAAs, while the women were aiming for the top eight.
"We closed out a really successful Zone meet today and I'm really happy with the entire team," head dive coach
Richard Marschner. "Everybody competed really hard throughout the sessions. Obviously getting all three women in on one-meter in the top five is a big accomplishment, so I'm really happy with how they did today."
On 1m
- Senior Holly Waxman finished in second-place, successfully securing her third event at NCAAS on one-meter. Staying consistent throughout the sessions, Waxman went in to finals in the top spot. This will be her fourth appearance at the national championship in her four years with Utah.
- Junior Kathryn Grant added a second event to her NCAA schedule after placing third in the one-meter finals with a score of 549.20. Grant averaged 47.20 points each round with her average score sitting at 6.39 each dive.
- With today's qualification, freshman Callie Eaglestone locked in her appearance at the NCAA one-meter springboard event; successfully earning a place on both springboards. Eaglestone finished her finals list at 525.25, with her strongest dive, a reverse 1 ½ pike, accumulating 49.20 points.
"Elias and Jesco just missed out today on platform and we're bummed that Jesco didn't make it," said Marschner. "He had such a great year and he will forever be out first Big 12 Champion."
On Platform
- Graduate Jesco Helling finished his platform event in 11th-place with a final score of 637.85. After today's performance, Helling successfully placed in the top-12 of all three boards.
- Junior Elias Petersen ended his tower event in 13th-place, less than 20 points away from qualifying for NCAAs on the final event. Though he didn't earn a spot in platform, Petersen will appear at the nation championship on both springboard events.
Looking Ahead
The Utah swimmers are in Ocala, Fla. to compete at the CSCAA National Invitational to wrap their season. The meet begins Thursday morning at the FAST Facility.
