CINCINNATI —The University of Utah women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match to Cincinnati on Saturday, falling 4-2 on the road. Utah's record moves to 7-9 overall and 2-5 in Big 12 competition following the loss.
The Utes faced early struggles in doubles play. The Bearcats claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. The Utes were battling at No. 2, where Sara Akid and Emma Valletta were tied 6-6 before the match was left unfinished.
In singles, Utah responded with strong performances from Kaila Barksdale and Emma Valletta. Barksdale cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3, while Valletta rallied after dropping the first set to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 on court four. Cincinnati, however, sealed the match with victories at the top two spots and at No. 5. Dylan Lolofie split the first two sets with Cincinnati's Callie Flanagan at No. 6 and was leading in a third set 5-0 when the match was called.
NEXT UP The Utes will next return home for matches against Kansas (March 27) and Iowa State (March 29) at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
