Utah Beach Classic Day One leads to Utah Wins over UC Davis, Boise State

Day one of the Utah Beach Classic was a success for the Utes! Graduate Transfer Student-Athlete Maeve Griffin began fourth-ever Utah Beach Classic, as she performed the National Anthem on the harmonica. After winning matches over UC Davis (3-2) and Boise State (3-2), Utah now moves to 16-6 on the season. Utah again was without their No. 2 Bella Vezzani, but still triumphed through the changing of lineups and uncertainty.

Utah's first match of the day came against UC Davis, where Utah's No. 2 pair of Langley Griffin and Ellyn Collins got the party started for Utah with a straight-set victory of (21-17) (21-15). Kylie Pitzak and Elle Burleson also won in straight sets, with both sets going to extra points (23-21) (23-21). The No. 1's in Quincy Stephens and Katie McAlister kept the Utes hot by taking yet another match in straight sets and only allowing ten points in the second (21-18) (21-10). Utah dropped the last two, leaving match one with a 3-2 victory over the aggies.

In the evening window, Boise State matched up against Utah. Being played between two teams receiving votes in the AVCA poll, there were some implications on the line heading into the match. Boise State was hot out of the gate, winning in the No. 4 spot. The Utes got back on track though, with three wins in a row, coming all from our No. 1, 2 and 3 pairings. Quincy and Katie were especially dominant again, only allowing 12 and 13 points in each set.

SENIOR DAY RECOGNITION
Tomorrow, Saturday, March 29 at 10:45 AM come recognize our seven seniors! Ellyn Collins, Maeve Griffin, Kylie Pitzak, Lauren Sayre, Keira Sheehan, Bella Vezzani and Sonja Wessel will be celebrated right before our match versus Arizona.

UP NEXT
Utah looks to defend the home-court tomorrow. Utah plays their first Big 12 matchup as they take on Arizona at 11 AM. Their second match of the day will be against a familiar opponent, ex-conference mate Oregon. That match is scheduled for 3 PM.
