STANFORD, Calif. – Gabriel Palacios won his second individual title of the season at The Goodwin on Saturday, leading the No. 13 University of Utah Men's Golf team to a seventh-place finish with a 5-under performance.
"I'm incredibly excited for Gabriel to get his second win at a tournament as special and historic as this is absolutely amazing. This was a great accomplishment," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "Otherwise, our team did not have its best. Sergio had a solid tournament finishing in the top 10, however the rest of us just did not compete at the level we usually expect from our team. We have been on the road a lot these past couple of weeks, and we have learned a lot from each event that will hopefully help us as we get into the postseason."
Palacios was one of five golfers to shoot 5-under at the tournament, shooting 3-under during the final round. It's the second individual title of the season for the sophomore, winning the John Burns Intercollegiate earlier this season in February. The effort is the fourth time this season Palacios has finished inside the top five to tie with
Brandon Robison. Palacios becomes the second Ute to win The Goodwin in three years as
Braxton Watts secured his first collegiate title at the tournament in 2023. The sophomore's victory tallies Utah's fifth individual tournament crown this season behind Jimenez (Palouse), Johnson (Tindall), Robison (Arizona Thunderbirds), and his own pair of titles.
Palacios saved his lowest score of the tournament for last, shooting 3-under to climb into the title race. The sophomore began the day with a bogey on the first hole before leveling his score with a birdie two holes later. Following three even marks, Palacios notched an eagle to sit 2-under moving into the back nine. Palacios grabbed a bogey three holes into the final half of the course but bettered his round with back-to-back birdies three holes later. To close the tournament, Palacios hit consecutive even marks to climb eight spots into a tie for first place. The Guatemala native shot 3-under for the day and 5-under for the tournament.
Sergio Jimenez opened the final round with a strong start, drilling back-to-back birdies to quickly shoot 2-under. Across the remaining seven holes of the front nine, Jimenez tallied five even marks, a bogey, and a double bogey to move into the back nine 1-over. The sophomore began the back nine with six even scores before drilling consecutive birdies once again to shoot 1-under for the round and 2-under for the tournament. Jimenez finished tied for 10
th, earning his fifth top ten placement of the season.
Davis Johnson also performed well on Saturday, using his best round to climb 17 spots into a tie for 83
rd. The redshirt junior sandwiched a double bogey in a pair of birdies through the opening three holes, returning back to even. After a bogey on the sixth hole, Johnson sat 1-over for the opening half of the course. After a pair of even marks Johnson ran into another bogey but totaled two more red marks through the final five holes. The third-round even score put Johnson 8-over for the tournament.
Robison and Watts both tied for 104
th on the individual leaderboard, each shooting 12-over while each falling 30 spots after Saturday's play. Each golfer shot 6-over for the final round to conclude the tournament.
