THIS WEEK
The No. 14 Utah Men's Golf team is back in action after a well-deserved week off, heading back to the Grand Canyon State for the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate to wrap up the regular season. It's the fifth straight season and the 12th season overall that the Utes are set to compete in the tournament. Utah's best showing in the Phoenix-based tournament came in April of 1998, finishing in second out of an 18-team field. One of Utah's better marks was just last season, tying for sixth out of 17 teams. The ASU Thunderbird Collegiate is entering its 51
st year as a Division 1 tournament, making it the sixth-longest running tournament in the country.
LAST TIME OUT
The Utes returned to The Goodwin at Stanford and continued to stay hot, earning another individual title while finishing in seventh as a team.
Gabriel Palacios earned his second crown of the season while tying four other golfers for first place. Palacios put together his best round on day three, shooting 3-under during the final round. Utah concluded the three-day tournament five strokes over par while sitting just six strokes out of the top three. It was the largest tournament of the season for the Utes, facing 29 other teams in a 164-golfer field. The Utes bested eight other ranked programs in the top 50.
IN THE RANKS
Utah dropped to No. 14 in the latest Scoreboard NCAA rankings, slipping one spot after being ranked No. 13 last week. The Utes remain as one of three Big 12 programs inside the top 15 alongside No. 5 Oklahoma State and No. 6 Arizona State. In the individual rankings, Jimenez ranks as the No. 26 men's college golfer in the country while
Gabriel Palacios sits at No. 35, jumping 13 spots, and
Brandon Robison at No. 80.
THE FIELD
In a smaller field, the Utes are one of just 10 teams participating at the Thunderbird Collegiate. While the field is small in size, the competition is strong as eight of ten teams rank inside the Top 50. The Utes will take on host No. 6 Arizona State, No. 27 Colorado, No. 56 Grand Canyon, No. 41 Houston, No. 62 LMU, No. 49 New Mexico, Oregon State, No. 10 UCLA, and No. 47 USC.
UTAH'S LINE-UP
The Utes continue to write in the same starters as they have all season. On the scorecard,
Brandon Robison,
Sergio Jimenez,
Braxton Watts,
Davis Johnson, and
Gabriel Palacios will look to keep the momentum rolling while
Peter Jung will golf as an individual.
COACHES THOUGHTS
"It has been great to have a week at home to work on our game," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "This week the field at the Thunderbird is the smallest we play in all year, however there are some great programs. Each of our players are familiar with Papago and are excited to get back to competing. It should be a great test of golf and a good measuring stick to where we are as we prepare for the conference championships.
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The two-day tournament will begin on Friday, April 11 and finish the next day on Saturday, April 12. Every team will complete the first two rounds of the tournament on Friday before wrapping up the regular season with the remaining round on Saturday.
