Utes Head to New Hampshire for NCAA Ski Championships
It's that time of year again—the college skiing world is on the verge of crowning an NCAA champion. And for the Utah Ski Team, there is a desire to bring home a 17th national title and fourth NCAA crown in the last five seasons.
Dartmouth College is serving as the host of the 2025 NCAA Ski Championships with events running from March 5-8. Alpine events will take place at the Dartmouth Skiway (March 5 - slalom; March 7 - GS) with Nordic competitions going down at Oak Hill (March 6 – 7.5K classic; March 8 – 20K freestyle).
The Utes were one of five teams nationally to qualify a full load of 12 participants for the meet. Colorado and Denver were the other RMISA programs to accomplish the feat, while Dartmouth and Vermont were the two teams out East to qualify 12 participants.
Utah's alpine lineup includes
Kaila Lafreniere,
Kaja Norbye and
Claire Timmermann on the women's side; the trio of men racing are
Johs Braathen Herland,
Sindre Myklebust and
Simen Strand. For Nordic, the Utes will race
Erica Lavén,
Celine Mayer and
Selma Nevin in the women's lineup with
Brian Bushey,
Joe Davies and
Zachary Jayne selected for the men.
Walker Hall was originally included in the men's Nordic lineup, but unfortunately had to be substituted due to illness. Jayne will compete in his place.
RMISA and Regional Champions
Utah was awarded the 2025 RMISA Regular Season championship after finishing atop the conference standings with 3,020.5 points. The standings are calculated by adding together team points from each of the five scheduled meets. Since the RMISA began awarding a regular season title in 2006, Utah has won it 10 times—more than any other team.
In addition, the team traveled to Alaska for the RMISA Championship meet, which also serves as the NCAA West Regional Championship. Utah won the meet and regional title after racking up 683 points and three individual regional champions:
Celine Mayer (women's 7.5K classic),
Zachary Jayne (men's 7.5K classic) and
Erica Lavén (women's 20K freestyle).
Utes on the World Stage
A pattern of the Utah Ski Team in recent seasons has seen various members of the team miss part of the collegiate regular season, but for good reason as various Utes took advantage of the opportunity to compete on the international stage. Despite being shorthanded for some meets as a result, Utah's depth showed in still winning the RMISA regular season championship.
Five current members of the Nordic team were selected for either the FIS U23 or Junior World Championships, including
Brian Bushey (U23),
Walker Hall (U23),
Neve Gerard (JWC),
Nina Schamberger (JWC) and
Lucas Wilmot (JWC). In addition, Hall and
Joe Davies have combined for nine starts in various World Cup competitions.
For alpine, each of Utah's six NCAA selections have made at least four starts in Nor-Am Cup races, with competitions taking place in Canada. Though not part of this year's NCAA lineup, alpine skier
Raphael Lessard raced in both Nor-Am Cup and European Cup action, picking up a January win in Super G while racing in Austria.
Utah Cleans Up in RMISA Postseason Awards
The Utah Ski Team was well-represented in the 2025 RMISA postseason awards. The team not only won the overall regular season championship, but also claimed the titles for alpine (combined men's and women's), women (combined alpine and Nordic), women's alpine and women's Nordic.
Individually, Utah had three RMISA MVP winners, with those awards presented to the skier who totals the most NCAA qualification points in each discipline and for each gender.
Erica Lavén was tabbed MVP for both women's classic and women's freestyle, while
Johs Braathen Herland tied for the MVP in men's giant slalom.
Seventeen members of the team collected All-RMISA laurels. Seven athletes from Utah earned First Team including
Joe Davies,
Walker Hall,
Johs Braathen Herland,
Zachary Jayne,
Erica Lavén,
Kaja Norbye and
Claire Timmermann.
On the Second Team, Utah has
Brian Bushey,
Kaila Lafreniere,
Celine Mayer,
Selma Nevin,
Wilhelm Normannseth and
Simen Strand. The quartet of
Evelina Fredricsson,
Harry Hoffman,
Raphael Lessard and
Sindre Myklebust received Honorable Mention.
To the Podium, Please
Post-race awards ceremonies have had a solid Utah flavor this season, with the Utes amassing 47 individual podium results (top-three finish or better). The 47 podiums are the most in the RMISA and are seven ahead of the next-closest team (Colorado – 40).
Erica Lavén led the way with 11 Nordic podiums in each of her starts—seven were wins.
Been Here Before
Of Utah's 12 skiers in the lineup for NCAAs, six have raced at the national championship meet before either with Utah or prior to transferring here.
Joe Davies was the national runner-up for Utah in last year's 7.5K freestyle and also won the individual 10K freestyle title in 2023—when Davies competed for Alaska Fairbanks. In addition,
Simen Strand was selected to represent Saint Michael's College at NCAAs each season from 2022-24.
The six athletes who have raced on the national stage before have combined for 16 All-American awards either with Utah or their prior team.
Utah and Dartmouth
In recorded history, Dartmouth has hosted the NCAA Ski Championships twice (1958, 2003). Utah did not compete at the national meet in 1958, but brought home the national title when the Big Green hosted in 2003. That year, the Utes dominated with four individual NCAA Champions. The group included Katrin Smigun (women's 5K freestyle; women's 15K classic), Lina Johansson (women's slalom) and Ben Thornhill (men's giant slalom)
The last time Utah trekked East for the NCAA Championships was in 2023 when the team raced in Lake Placid, New York. The program came home from that journey with its fourth straight national championship, tallying 13 All-American honors and four individual winners.
