ORLANDO, Fla. – Utah sophomore golfer
Gabriel Palacios has been selected to compete in the Arnold Palmer Cup, announced by the Golf Channel on Tuesday, becoming the first Ute and the first Guatemalan golfer to be selected.
The tournament will be held at Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina on June 5-7. With this selection, Palacios makes history on multiple occasions. The sophomore is the first Ute in school history to be named to either Team USA or Team International. Similarly, Palacios stands alone as the first Guatemala native to participate in the prestigious tournament.
The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and began at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, Fla., in 1997. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men's and women's university/college golfers matching the United States against a team of international players. The Palmer Cup has been played at some of the world's greatest courses, including The Old Course at St. Andrews, The Royal County Down, Royal Portrush, Baltusrol, The Honors Course, Cherry Hills, and Lahinch. Beginning with the 2018 matches at Evian Resort Golf Club, the Palmer Cup is the only major tournament that features men and women playing side-by-side as partners (via the Arnold Palmer Cup Communications).
Palacios has had an exceptional year with the Utes, including claiming his first two collegiate crowns of his career. His first title came at the John Burns Intercollegiate where he shot an 11-under 199 before continuing his stellar play at The Goodwin with a 5-under 205 performances. Since the start of the spring season Palacios has climbed the national rankings, jumping from No. 142 to No. 37. Palacios earned Utah's first-ever Big 12 Golfer of the Month award in February before taking the honors again in March to sit as the reigning back-to-back Big 12 Golfer of the Month. The Ute led the team in the past three tournaments while totaling five top five placements this season. Palacios is currently one of eight international Big 12 golfers to claim an individual crown this season.
