SALT LAKE CITY – Utah swimming and diving head coach Jonas Persson has brought on
McKay King as the program's newest volunteer assistant coach.
King swam for the Utes during the 2016-17 season, earning Pac-12 all-academic team honors, and will now give his time coaching at his alma mater.
"McKay is a great person and a great coach," Persson said. "He is very detail-oriented and smart. Having a coach on staff that also swam at Utah and loves the program is an advantage that is unbeatable. I can't wait to have him start, get to know the team, and make us better!"
King spent last season as the associate head coach at American Fork High School, helping lead the boy's team to the 5A state title. He coached his alma mater to six team titles and two state records in his first season at the helm.
King has also worked as a private coach since 2021. He has overseen the training of Paralympian Audrey Kim, who has set three American records and claimed five individual titles while under his guidance, including the 2023 national title in the 50m Freestyle.
Before coming to Utah, King swam for BYU, where he earned all-MPSF first team honors in the 400 medley relay and All-MPSF second team recognition in the 200 medley relay, 400 free relay, 800 free relay, 100 Back and 100 Free. As a prep at American Fork, King was a four-time 5A state champion and was named the 2009 5A Swimmer of the Year.
In addition to his experience in the pool, King has worked extensively in the medical field, including roles as a clinical specialist and surgical technician.
A native of American Fork, King earned his bachelor's degree in strategic communications with an emphasis in public relations and marketing from Utah.
