SALT LAKE CITY, Utah.— The Utah women's basketball team fell 61-45 to the No. 18 Baylor Bears in the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Wednesday night.
Utah is now 13-5 overall on the season and 4-2 in Big 12 play. Chyra Evans posted her first career double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds. Lani White posted double figures with 14 points. White and Reese Ross also had an impressive night on the boards with eight rebounds each.
GAME SUMMARY
The Utes got on the board first with a made three pointer from Lani White. Baylor quickly answered back by going on a 9-0 run. Utah fought back and held the Bears to a 2:39 scoring drought to trail just 21-18 at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams started off the second quarter on a four minute scoring drought. The Utes broke the drought with a clutch layup made by Chyra Evans to bring the Utes within two points. Baylor continued the drought to over six minutes making 1-of-12 from the field. However, Baylor closed out the half on a 10-0 run to take a 35-24 lead over the Utes.
Utah couldn't find any footing coming out of the break as Baylor pushed out for an 8-0 run to take a 15 point lead. The Utes continued fighting and pushed for a 6-0 run while holding Baylor to four minute scoring drought. As the third quarter ended, the Bears held a 48-37 lead over the Utes.
Both teams started the fourth quarter with a three minute scoring drought. Evans sank a pair of free throws to end the drought but Baylor pressed on to take over control. The Bears controlled the rest of the game and came away with the 61-45 win over the Utes.
LEADERS
Utah had two Utes score in double figures,both Lani White and Chyra Evans posted 14 points. Evans had her first career double-double with her career-high rebounds of 11.
White and Reese Ross each had big nights on the boards pulling down eight each. White and Evans also added three assists a piece to help out the Utes offense.
COMPARISON
Utah shot 26.2% from the field while Baylor shot 38.7%. Utah went 12.0% from three while Baylor shot 36%. At the free-throw line, Utah shot 71.4% going 10-of-14 while Baylor shot 57.1% converting 4-of-7.
The Utes had a big night on the boards pulling down 45 to the Bears 41 rebounds.
UP NEXT
Utah will head on the road to take on Houston on Saturday Jan. 17. Before coming back to the Huntsman to take on Texas Tech on January 24th.
