SALT LAKE CITY– The Utah women's basketball team fell to rival BYU 77-65 Saturday afternoon. This is the first time Utah has lost to BYU since 2021.
Utah now has a 15-7 overall record and sits at 6-4 in Big 12 play. Utah was led by Lani White's 20 points and Reese Ross' 13 rebounds.
GAME SUMMARY The Utes jumped out to an early 11-6 lead over the Cougars. BYU then went on a 6-0 run to tie the game but Utah persevered to push out for an 18-14 lead to end the first quarter.
Utah pushed out for an eight point lead early in the second quarter. The Utes locked in on defense and held BYU to a 4:24 scoring drought to end the first half while going on a 7-0 run to take a 35-25 lead at the break.
The Cougars started the second half with five quick points and held the Utes to a two minute scoring drought. A pair of free throws from Chyra Evans broke the drought and gave the momentum back to the Utes as they pulled out for a nine point lead. The Cougars hit three from beyond the arc over the course of two minutes to spark some energy and bring the score back within five. Despite BYU outscoring Utah 23-17 in the third quarter, the Utes were able to maintain a 52-48 lead going into the final quarter of play.
BYU remained hot to start the fourth quarter thanks to back-to-back threes to overtake the lead for the first time in the game. The Cougars continued to dominate the momentum in the fourth quarter and went on to pull out the 77-65 victory over the Utes.
LEADERS Utah had three Utes score in double figures and were led by Lani White's posted 20 points while Maty Wilke tied her season-high of 18. Chrya Evans put up 11 for Utah including an impressive 6-of-6 from the line.
Reese Ross put her second consecutive double-digit rebounding performance with 13.
COMPARISON Utah shot 33.3% from the field while BYU shot 44.6%. Utah went 22.2% from three knocking down 6-of-27 while BYU shot 31.3% going 10-of-32. At the free-throw line, Utah shot 86.7% going 13-of-15 while BYU shot 81.0% converting 17-of-21.
UP NEXT Utah will make the trek across the country to Orlando, Fla. to take on the Golden Knights of UCF. Utah's next home game will be Feb. 7 against Iowa State.
