TEMPE, Ariz. – The Utah women's basketball team couldn't find a spark in the 71-61 loss to Arizona State Wednesday evening.
Utah now has a 16-9 overall record and sits at 7-6 in Big 12 play. The Utes were led by Lani White's 19 points and Maty Wilke's 17 points. Reese Ross posted her second consecutive double-digit rebounding game with 11 boards.
GAME SUMMARY Utah and Arizona State started the game out evenly matched with neither team claiming any major momentum swings. ASU edged just past Utah to end the first quarter with a 13-11 lead.
In the second quarter, the Sun Devils pulled out for a seven point lead but the Utes answered with a made three ball from Maty Wilke and a second chance driving layup from LA Sneed. Utah trailed just 33-30 going into the halftime break.
With six minutes to go in the third quarter Utah was able to tie the game up at 39-39 thanks to a corner three from Sneed. Arizona State didn't let that stand for long as they went on a 10-2 run over Utah. The Utes ended the third quarter on a two minute scoring drought as the Sun Devils claimed a 52-43 lead going into the final quarter of play.
Early in the fourth quarter Utah found some momentum going on a 7-0 run. Despite a Utah spark, ASU was able to maintain the lead the entirety of the fourth quarter to pull out the 71-61 win.
LEADERS Utah had three Utes score in double figures and were led by Lani White who had 19 points. Maty Wilke posted 17 points for Utah while Chyra Evans added 11. Reese Ross posted her ninth double digit rebounding game this season with her 11 rebounds.
Avery Hjelmstad, LA Sneed and Evans each posted three assists while Wilke added three steals.
COMPARISON Utah shot 38.0% from the field while Arizona State shot 45.5%. Utah went 24.0% from three knocking down 6-of-24 Arizona State shot 53.8% going 7-of-13. At the free-throw line, Utah shot 85.0% going 17-of-20 while Arizona State shot 93.3% converting 14-of-15.
Utah had 15 assists on 19 made field goals while Arizona State had 19 assists on 25 made field goals. The Utes outrebounded the Sun Devils 39-24 with Utah pulling down 12 offensive boards to Arizona State's four.
UP NEXT Utah will return home to host Cincinnati in the Elaine Elliott Legacy game on Feb. 14. Utah will then hit the road again to face Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. before returning home to host rival, BYU on Feb. 21.
