LOUISVILLE – Utah lacrosse senior student-athlete
Nikko DiPonio has been named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Team of the Week, the organization announced Wednesday. DiPonio was one of 10 players selected across all of Division I men's lacrosse and one of four defensemen.
This marks the first time in his career that DiPonio has been named to the USILA Team of the Week, though the senior has been named the ASUN Defensive Player of the Week three times this season. Utah has been represented on the Team of the Week 10 times, and DiPonio joins
Ryan Stines as Utah players named to the team this season.
DiPonio led Utah's defensive effort in last Saturday's 17-10 win against Dartmouth. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native caused a team-high four turnovers and tied for the team lead with seven ground balls. DiPonio captained a defense that caused 21 turnovers on the day, setting the Utah program record, and forced six turnovers on clearance attempts.
Through six games this season, DiPonio has tallied 32 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers to go with a goal and three assists. DiPonio leads the nation with 3.33 caused turnovers per game and anchors the Utah defense that forces 13.33 caused turnovers per game, the second-best mark in Division I. He is also tied for the national lead in caused turnovers in a single game after forcing six in the season-opening win against Delaware.
DiPonio enters the week with 91 career caused turnovers and sits just seven away from breaking the Utah program record.
DiPonio and the Utes are back in action on Wednesday, March 10, when they face the Marquette Golden Eagles in Milwaukee. Game time is set for 11 a.m. MT with coverage on ESPN+.
