JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Junior defender
Luca Pivetta was named the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week following the Utes' 18-0 shutout win against Queens, the league office announced Monday.
This marks the first career conference weekly award for Pivetta. Utah has won 11 weekly awards from the ASUN this season, the most in the conference, and has now taken home Defensive Player of the Week nods in three consecutive weeks.
Pivetta anchored the Utah defense against Queens, causing three turnovers and two ground balls in the Utes' shutout win. He led the Utah back line for the full 60 minutes, limiting the Royals to just 16 shots and only six on goal. The Utes caused 14 turnovers, nabbed 45 ground balls, and stopped Queens on 10 of its 21 clearance attempts.
Utah's shutout was the first in program history, the first by a Division I program since 2015, and just the third since 1984. Utah's previous program record for fewest goals allowed in a game was three, set last season against Queens.
Pivetta has started all 12 games for the Utes this season, causing 15 turnovers and recording 22 ground balls while adding a goal and a pair of helpers. He's been an integral part of the defensive unit that has allowed just 9.33 goals per game and has caused 12.67 turnovers per outing.
