SALT LAKE CITY — Utah women's tennis volunteer assistant coach
Megan Dorny has been a long standing figure around the Utes program. She's served as a coach in varying capacities throughout three different stints, including head coach from 2002-2007.
UtahUtes.com recently talked with Dorny to get to know her on a personal level as well as her coaching styles and philosophies.
- Why did you choose Utah?
I chose Utah the first time, as a player, because I really liked the coach, the way he recruited me, his honesty, and authenticity. I chose to coach at Utah because I loved my playing experience. I grew a lot as a player and as a person in college and I want to help others do the same.
- Do you have a coaching catch phrase? If so, what is it and why?
I sometimes say "this is why we practice," or "this is why we're here" in matches because I want to remind our players that practice is meant to prepare them for competition. The whole purpose of our preparation is to enjoy the battle of competition. I also say "can I get you anything?" for obvious reasons but also so our players know that their coaches will support them and help them with anything they need during a match
- Who is someone you look up to or admire and describe why?
I look up to and admire all the coaches I've had over the years, including the women I coach with now. A common thread linking them all is a passion and love for the game that comes through in the number of hours they spend helping me hone my skills. Passion is a quality I admire in people of all professions now. I love when people continually choose to commit to and love what they do.
- If the genie granted you just one wish, what would you wish for?
If I could wish for health and happiness for my family and friends then that. But if it were only for me, probably tons of money.
- What's the first thing you look for when scouting potential future Utes?
I look at mechanics and grips first to make sure there aren't any glaring weaknesses and then I spend a lot of time watching how and if they compete.
- What are three words to describe yourself?
Driven, Dedicated, and maybe even a little Obsessive…and always Tired.
- Share one fun fact about yourself that you would want the world to know about you
I have a big family and I love it. My husband and I have 6 kids and one grandson.
- How would you describe the culture at Utah?
Very process oriented. Each day we work and compete hard and intentionally and let results take care of themselves. Then we try and get a little better for tomorrow.
- What are some of your favorite hobbies outside of tennis?
I run, read and spend a lot of time driving my kids around to watch them compete.
- What's your go to sweet treat?
I really like Ben and Jerry's, popcorn and most gummy candy!
