On the game …
It was good, you know. We fixed a few things that were broken from the last game. It’s just part of the process. Early on, it’s nice to get a win. You know, mentally, we’re getting brought into trying to figure out how to guard other people’s stuff, and our guys understand the importance of a shoot around and you gotta bring a lot of different facets to it, physical conditioning, toughness, preparation, and you know with as many new faces as we have, Kuz and Lorenzo and some of those guys are doing a pretty good job of expressing how important some of those things are. As we keep moving forward in the season, the team level is elevating starting Friday for our game, and we just gotta trust the process, you know, it’s written in our team facility, and it’s a lot of things and you can’t get too up or too down, but we just need to keep making improvements. I like our team, I like working with this group of guys, and we’ll have a chance if we can just stay together.
On improving since last game …
Getting the jitters out “is always part of it. I typically, you shoot free throws at a 50 percent clip, you kick the ball all over the gym, uh, it’s the first time the popcorn’s popping in our building, and it creates some stress, that was the focal point the last couple days in practice. There’s a correlation, we’ve been watching some film within our system, just do what we’re expected to do, you know, within out boundaries good things happen. In our game against Northwest Nazarene, when we kind of made some stuff up, there was a real high probability that we were going to turn the ball over. There was just too much of making stuff up and putting us in a bad way. Tonight was great in terms of the, uh, limiting the turnovers, anytime you can keep it in single digits, I don’t care who you’re playing, that’s a positive thing and we need to start really respecting the value of the basketball.
On the team …
I know a lot of good things happen when the ball goes to the post, and specifically tonight, the defense collapsed, we kicked it out, didn’t force a lot of shots, Jayce continues to grow, I think, in the post, Kuz, you know is probably more of a play away, face the basket kind of player, although at some point, he could end up playing some three, and then he’s real crafty down in the block too, so maybe it’s the first time in the history of our program that we use our three men to post up a little bit more. Tyler, he does a nice job with his back to the basket.
Sophomore Guard Parker Van Dyke
On learning from the game …
I think what we learn is how to make adjustments. The first game, you know, we come out and win by 40+ points, but there’s a lot of things we need to work on, so we come out in the second game, and just try to make adjustments to get better each game.
On the game …
The first game, especially in the first half, I think we had 13 turnovers, and so that was one stat that we definitely wanted to lower. Just focus on taking care of the ball and focus on executing offensively, and I think that’s something we improved on tonight.
Tonight was just a good game for my confidence and will be good in preparing me for the rest of the year.
Tyler and Kyle are two great post players, so when we get them the ball, they’re going to make plays. So we gotta be ready to make shots and play off of them.
Junior Guard JoJo Zamora
On learning from the game …
I think just playing together. Just playing together these first couple games and just getting real good at playing together and helping us out with all the sets.
On the game …
Just executing our offense. Like he said, the turnovers, so just cleaning that up, focusing on our offense.
Today we kind of loosened up a little bit, and hopefully, we’ll just get better and better.

Concordia Head Coach Brad Barbarick
On goals of a playing a game against a Division I school …
Obviously our goals are to play as hard as we can. We know we are physically going to be under-manned a little bit. Our senior starting point guard is home with a concussion and so he didn’t even travel so that made it a little bit tougher. I have been a coach at Concordia for 23 years and we have played Oregon and Oregon State a couple times and a bunch of Big Sky. The hope was to compete as hard as we can. We don’t ever quit. We don’t put any goals on a game like this and we want to compete as best as we can.
On what it shows about his team …
We play in a really good conference in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, the GNAC. Significant travel, we go to Fairbanks, Alaska, Montana State Billings, Northwest Nazarene, who was here last week. We take a lot of plane trips so it is like a small Division I conference in that regard. So when we come up and play a Pac-12 team it is a great opportunity to test ourselves on a significant road trip in a great environment and it is a great experience for our kids. We played on the Pac-12 Network and all those things are positive for our network. You have to be realistic. Physically we are going to be out-matched so we try to mix some things up and do some things. We didn’t shoot the ball very well. Our best player is Drew Martin and he was 3-13 tonight, struggled. You saw him get up on that dunk, you see some athleticism so he has some high major Division I talent.
On exposure …
Whenever we can get our name out there it just helps us, name recognition. It is an opportunity for us to establish ourselves a little bit more. We are new to Division II, this is our second year in the GNAC. We were NAIA for a long time and had a lot of success. For us to step up here and play Utah, that is great experience for our kids and for our program and for the university.
On Utah …
They were one of the best teams in the country last year, a number three seed last year in the NCAA tournament. I knew there would be a lot of turnover from last year and coach Krystkowiak would have a young team so I thought it would be a great opportunity for us.
They are going to have to shoot it better; their bigs are very young. They didn’t shoot it very well from three, 6-23 against Northwest Nazarene and 8-26 tonight against a Division II team. Coach Krystkowiak, and I knew coach [Rick] Majerus, he is a basketball lifer like coach Majerus was and he is going to bring culture here and and recruit the right kids. They are really young here but he has the right kids. I like what he is doing.
