Utes Draw with Wildcats in Season Opener

Solomon logs Utah’s first season-opening clean sheet since 2016
SALT LAKE CITY - Anna Solomon stopped both shots sent her way to become the first Utah goalkeeper to log a clean sheet in the team's season opener since 2016 and the University of Utah women's soccer team logged a 0-0 draw with the Weber State Wildcats on Thursday night at Ute Field in Salt Lake City.
This stalemate keeps the Utes undefeated in season openers under head coach Hideki Nakada, who is now 3-0-3 in lid-lifters since taking over the program.
The Wildcats earned their first chance in the 21st minute when a Lily Blum pass put Oakley Anderson one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Solomon deflected it over the net to keep the match scoreless, which it remained into halftime.
Utah continued pushing for the go-ahead goal in the opening moments of the second half, with Rylan Park and Julia Oka both contributing on-target efforts in the 53rd minute. Solomon did her part to keep match scoreless with a stop on a free kick in the 60th minute.
The Utes had another near-miss in the 70th minute, when a Park header on a corner kick hit off the crossbar and Affleck contributed one more shot on goal in the 86th minute, but neither side could break through before the final whistle.
The overwhelming edge in chances, shots and shots on goal all belonged to the home side, with Utah owning a 17-4 edge in overall shots and a 7-2 advantage in on-target efforts. Sophie Bellini led the Utes in shots with five and Affleck's two tries on goal were also a team high. Maddie Stoddard was credited with two shots.

Utah's first road fixture is scheduled for Monday, when they'll visit the Utah Valley Wolverines for a 7:30 p.m. match.

"We created several good opportunities to score," said Nakada, "but in the end, we lacked the cutting edge to break through.
