Davidson scores, moves into team lead in points in 1-1 draw
AMES, Iowa - Shannon Davidson tallied her third goal of the season as the University of Utah women's soccer team recorded a 1-1 draw with the Iowa State Cyclones on Thursday evening in Big 12 Conference action at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames, Iowa.
Â
Utah's 2026 record now stands at 4-5-3.
Â
"We did a lot of good things today," said coach Hideki Nakada, "and obviously it's really disappointing not to leave here with three points considering the number of opportunities we were able to create. We have a young team, but at this point in the season, that can't be an excuse. We have to be able to close out these types of games and make sure we get the results our performances deserve."
Â
Much of the early part of the first half consisted of the two sides patiently searching for a chance, with Utah earning two corners in the first 10 minutes and Anna Solomon making her first save of the night in the 13th minute.
Â
Utah was the first side to create and capitalize on a chance, doing so in the 16th minute. From just past midfield, a Sophie Bellini through ball connected with Davidson, who beat a defender to the ball at the top of the box and fired a right-footed shot past the keeper. Davidson is now tied for the team lead in goals, with three, and leads the squad with nine points, while Bellini and Reese Clem picked up assists. Solomon made her second save moments after Davidson's goal and that was ISU's final chance of the half as the Utes took their lead into the break.
Â
Bellini nearly started the second period with a goal when she was left open in front of the Cyclone net, but her shot from close range was blocked. In the 50th minute, a Utah foul gave ISU a free kick and Breezie Brewer's shot found the target to even the score.
Â
Utah had the first chance to untie the score when they were awarded a free kick at the top of the 18, only to see Bellini's shot blocked again. A third Bellini attempt was denied seconds later on another free kick and a Davidson rocket from distance in the 58th minute bounced off the crossbar and was cleared.
Â
Iowa State thought they had taken the lead in the 62nd minute, but the scorer was ruled offside. Kennedy Fletcher tried her luck from 20 yards out in the 70th minute, but her effort was off-target, as was a Davidson try off a corner kick six minutes later.
Â
The Cyclones almost took the lead twice in the final five minutes, first on a corner kick when the ball bounced on to the foot of Izzy Kapanke inside the six-yard box, but Solomon was on the spot to block the shot. Less than two minutes later, a cross was headed towards the net by ISU's Sophie Forrester and Solomon was again in perfect position to make the save and preserve the tie.
Â
"We'll use this weekend to recover," said Nakada, "learn from today, and get ourselves ready for another challenging away trip next week."
Â
For the eighth time in 2026, the Utes outshot their hosts, this time by a 19-8 margin. Six of those attempts came from Bellini and Shannon Davidson took six shots as well, a new career-high for both players. David and Clem were credited with two shots each and Solomon matched her season-high with four saves.

Utah's next opportunity will come on Oct. 8, when they'll visit the Cincinnati Bearcats.
