Utes post 5-2 edge in shots on goal in 1-0 defeat

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team posted five shots on goal compared to only two for the visiting TCU Horned Frogs, but the Utes were defeated 1-0 on Thursday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Ute Field in Salt Lake City.

Utah's 2026 record is now 3-5-2 and they are 0-2 in Big 12 play.

The match was quiet for most of the early going until near misses from both sides in the 20th minute. First, Utah earned a corner and perfect ball from Kennedy Fletcher found the head of Reese Clem in front of goal. Clem's shot was just off target, however, bouncing off the post before being cleared by TCU. The Horned Frogs then found themselves on the attack. A through ball sent Emma Yolinsky in alone on Utah keeper Anna Solomon, but the Utah stopper stoned Yolinsky and the match remained scoreless.

In the 32nd minute, pressure from TCU resulted in a loose ball that ended up on the foot of Eres Freifeld, who buried her shot in an empty net for the night's only goal. Just over a minute later, a pass from Shannon Davidson sent Julia Oka in on goal, but the sophomore's shot was pushed over the crossbar.

Control for much of the second half belonged to the Utes and TCU was held without an on-target effort over the final 45 minutes. Jastel David and Sophie Bellini both helped apply pressure by putting shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the period. In the 77th minute, Davidson and Bellini collaborated to create an opportunity that sent Bellini towards goal, but her shot sailed just wide. Utah also earned a pair of corners over the final 15 minutes, but the tying goal proved elusive and the clock eventually ran out on the home team.

Although TCU ended the evening with an 11-8 edge in overall shots, Utah could claim the advantage in on-target tries. Oka and Bellini were both credited with multiple shots for the Utes.

Utah's next challenge will come on Sunday, when they'll host No. 23 TCU at 12 p.m at Ute Field.
