Clem ties for team-high with third goal of 2026 in 3-1 defeat

TEMPE, Ariz. - Reese Clem picked up her third goal of the 2026 season, but the University of Utah women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

Utah's record is now 3-4-2.

The Sun Devils started the game on the attack and Utah keeper Anna Solomon saved the home team's first on-target attempt in the sixth minute, but in the 12th minute, a header from Kierra Blundell got ASU on the board.

It didn't take long for the Utes to start pushing for an equalizer, as Julia Oka put a shot on frame moments after Blundell's score. Maddie Stoddard and Brooke Garnder put attempts on target later in the frame and Utah's pressure would pay off in the 36th minute. Sophie Bellini placed a corner kick just outside the ASU goal and Gardner's header landed at the foot Clem, who booted in her third goal of the year. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Sun Devils were able to retake the lead at the 42:19 mark and the 2-1 score held into halftime.

Clem has now moved into a tie for the team lead in both goals and points.

The first big play of the second half was made by Solomon, when ASU's Sierra Bergen ended up 1-on-1 with Solomon near the top of the 18. Bergen sent a cross toward an open Blundell, but the Utah goalkeeper disrupted the pass and grabbed the ball to deny the Sun Devils.

On the offensive end, the Utes nearly equalized in the 61st minute when Shannon Davidson gained possession at the top of the box, but her shot was just wide. Seven minutes later, Blundell scored for the second time to increase ASU's edge.

Undeterred, Utah continued trying to battle its way back into the match, totaling five shots over the final 20 minutes, including a pair of near misses from Davidson. The sophomore's first try was blocked in the 71st minute and her second effort was a close-in attempt that Kennedy Zorn saved. Pickelle, Clem and Nevaeh Peregrina contributed shots as well during that span but the goal the Utes needed to cut the deficit to one refused to materialize.

ASU ended the night with a 15-13 advantage in shots, including seven shots on frame compared to six for Utah. Davidson was credited with three shots, while Clem and Bellini each recorded two. In goal, Solomon made four stops.

The Utes will return home on Thursday, when they'll host No. 20 TCU at Ute Field at 7 p.m.
