SALT LAKE CITY - Joe Kenn, who has worked the last eight years at Boise State University, has been named the head strength and conditioning coach at the University of Utah. Kenn began his appointment on May 3. Kenn was the director of the strength and conditioning department at Boise State for five years. He was also an assistant and graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach for three years with the Broncos.
Prior to his tenure at Boise State, Kenn worked at his alma mater, Wake Forest University, as the assistant varsity fitness director. Kenn started his career in 1989 at Pine Crest Preparatory School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he was the strength and conditioning coordinator, assistant football coach and head wrestling coach.
Kenn is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and served as the Idaho State director. A certified strength and conditioning specialist, he is a member of USA Weightlifting, a certified level one weightlifting coach and a certified referee for USA Powerlifting. He also served as the Idaho State chairperson for the American Powerlifting Association.
Kenn received his master's degree in curriculum and instruction at Boise State in 1993. While at Boise State, Kenn was named to the National Dean's Recognition List for academic excellence. He has been published in several coaching journals such as Strength and conditioning, Coach and Athletic Director, Gridiron Coach and Performance Conditioning for Volleyball.
He graduated from Wake Forest in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in health and sports science. A member of the Demon Deacon football team, Kenn was named offensive lineman of the year (1987) and earned the Bill George Award for outstanding overall lineman of the year (1987). Kenn was also named the weightlifter of the year (1988) and an All-American strength and conditioning athlete by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (1988).
