Salt Lake City - The National Multiple Sclerosis Society Utah State Chapter and the Dinner of Champions Selection Committee selected Ute skier Petra Svet as the 2001 Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year recipient. The Utah head women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott will be honored as the 2001 Sportsperson of the Year. The MS Dinner of Champions is an annual fund raising dinner for the National MS Society Utah State Chapter that recognizes several "Champions" from across the state who set an incredible standard of dedication, honor and achievement in athletics, the community and/or other endeavors. The 23rd annual Dinner of Champions will be held on Sept. 20, 2001.
In only her second year as a Ute, Svet was the 2001 NCAA National Champion in the Women's Slalom, recording a time of 1:28.76. She posted the fastest first-run time in the women's slalom held on the technical Ross Slalom Course in Middlebury, Vt. With a reverse 15 start order for the second run, Svet recorded the fifth-fastest time on a deteriorating course to clinch the title. She marked a 12th place finish in the NCAA Women's Giant Slalom, with a time of 1:04.79. Svet was the recipient the Toril Forland Outstanding Skier Award, which is awarded to the female athlete who has been an important factor to the success and accomplishments of the Women's Ski Team. She earned her first podium finish earlier this season and went on her way to land seven top-10 and five top-5 finishes this year. The Utes capped off the 2001 season with a fourth place finish at the NCAA championships. Their success included four skiers named to the All-America First Team, and five named to All-America Second Team.
The winningest coach in school history, Elliott has kept the winning tradition alive since earning the head coaching position in 1983-84. She has posted a 369-150 (.711) career record in 17 seasons. In the last 10 years alone, Elliott has guided the Utes to nine 20-win seasons, five 1st-place, three 2nd-place and two third-place finishes in conference play. Overall, Elliott has led the Utes to thirteen 20-win seasons and three 19-win seasons, averaging 20 wins per season. Elliott was named the 1999-2000 IKON/WBCA Division I District 7 Coach of the Year and the 1999-2000 inaugural Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. She recorded her 350th career-win at home on Sat., Nov. 25 in the 66-33 victory over Weber State. On Sat., Feb. 10, Elliott's 2001 Utah team recorded a seventh-consecutive 20-win season.
